Hi guys looking at putting more power on the pavement and am hoping for a spool to throw into the irs trans. now my question is do they make them? ive
done a search and can only find them for the swingers not the trailing arms. now i know you can get the quaife but for approx. 2 gorrilas theres still
the possibilty that it will stuff up reducing it to producing hideous number 1's instead of the beautiful number 11's i like to see when the smoke
clears. can anyone point me in the right direction?
regards,
trev
Ring Weddle in the USA.
They make one with larger splines to take the 2lt bus CV flanges.
The smaller splines snap when you upgrade the troublesome CVs.
You wll need special seals that they, or any bearingshop can supply.
Last years price was $595 USD (should still be current)
Should have it by friday if you ring tomorrow morning.

Is this for drags?
I wouldnt like a spool on the street
.
thanks dave, your always so detailed with your answers... no need to ask more questions so thanks.
mat, it will be for both, only concern is the weight with my car... there is none in the front
maybe lots of understeer so will need to have a toy when its finally built
For street use I would have to recommend using the Quaife.
The understeer(no steer) with the spool is quite scarey with a car that is lighter in front.
Plenty of people have gone that way, but you have to be"on the ball" at all times.
Hi
A Quaife will never wear out like a clutch pack LSD does and leave you single pegging and they are pretty hard to break if you use the one with Kombi
CVs.
A spool besides being hard to drive on the street like Dave said is illegal to use on the street.
Steve
my car wont be driven often, i have my work ute,and i have a sedan commodore, which will have a worked 8 in it by the end of the year with a 5 speed
for now possibly going 6 speed later on and will have a mini spool, just searching for the motor at the moment as it only a 6. Then finally i will
have my other vw based car so yeah it really wont be driven all that much maybe 10,000 a year if im lucky plus runs to the strip and back so it
definitely isnt my daily driver will be i think just a tuff weekender and mild strip car.
i know the risks with the boys in blue if they realize the car has a spool but will talk my way out of it as most wouldnt have even seen my car
before.
If you have an accident, is it really an accident?
i understand what your saying newt, i dont have an answer, i suppose i dont plan on having an accident but i guess no one does. could i ask the same question in regards to an lsd? with a spool if its illegal its illegal hence why i really do get what your saying. i suppose thats what insurance is for, i mean at the end of the day i highly doubt that the insurance company will open up the transaxle to find out if its spool or not. if i get it towed straight away then the inspector will not drive it anyway so its not really that much of an issue. if i decide to get a spare transaxle then i will opt to run one with a spool and one without just changing it over depending on my mood or when something breaks. i appreciate the concern tho champ
Hi
A spool will really overload the CVs, if you beak a CV with a spool you will do a very fast 90 degree turn.
Steve
Spool on the Street.......stupidity.
The next question is, if someone dies, is an accident?
Newt
ok so now i need 100% honest answers, has anyone destroyed a quaife lsd? how often have you guys needed to get it tightened or recoed?
The only ones I have seen damaged were the ones with the small spline.
Shock load snapping it off if you have any decent power.
This can be improved, as can stock ones, by using a cap and bolt to retain the flange instead of a stock circlp.
AND... the thrust faces inside one became galled on one high power,(over 700hp) application, but it did not actually fail.
The galling can be reduced with careful oil groove modifications.
Normally they require no regular maintanence, but like any moving part,
lubrication is your friend, so keep is fresh and clean.(oil absorbs moisture over time)
Hi
I snapped an output shaft, it was the small spline type through my own stupidity, I thought I was in the water at burnout box, I wasn't.
Steve
i reckon it may be worth loookin into the subi box option, apparently some have lsd, if it works u get a 5speed as well
thanks guys for the replies, grogy, my car is not registered and i really dont want to go by the engineers, a 5th gear would be nice but yeah, dont
like the idea of engineers.
what sort of ponies at the rears were you producing when you thought you was in the burnout box steve?
newt i think you jinxed me about having an accident, some young girl went through a wet roundabout today, she lost control spun round 180 degrees and
kissed the side of my work ute, front guard, door tray, the works... its got just 10,000 kms on the thing and booked in on friday for the service
ah well some days hes looking over you other days hes looking upon you i
guess... not supersticious but if i waqs maybe id be thinking its a sign
Hi
I'm not sue what sort of hp I had, it was a heavy car, 9 inch rear wheels with sticky street tyres, 2.1 WBX turbo.
