hi, what type of gauges are u using, brand, elec or mech, accuracy etc any recommendations as to where to buy. thanks greg

electric all the way................ try running a mechanical oil press or temp guage in a bug man what a line .........................

My custom gauges came today but I have to sign and pick em up tomorrow at the post office.

Mechanical gauges are next to usless in a vw, theyre designed for cars with the engine 1 foot away on the other side of the fire wall.

My first bug had a mechnical oil pressure gauge under the ash tray, it worked ok but naturally with a 4M long plastic capillary tube was abit laggy but bigger concern was the line coming out under the dash ruptureing all over the driver and passangers legs

Electric ones work well and are a much easier install

definately electric. i have electric auto meter gauges.

I'm with Joel and Lee, the thought of running an oil ling into the cabin and behind the dash doesn't work for me no matter how accurate it might be.

Interestingly I just started thinking about building some custom digital gauges yesterday. I imagine it would be possible, but trying to source some of the parts is the problem. Using a car PC would probably work, but that sarts getting a bit expensive.

Anyway, my guess is Joel will come up with a how-to, so stay tuned.

screw one sender into engine block, open beer, connect wire to said sender and other end to gauge, open 2nd beer, start engine. Any questions?


On a serious note digital gauges may look more asthetically pleasing but I find analogue to be more practical

Maybe I'm just sloooooooow ayyyyye but when I had a digital AFR gauge it took a sec or 2 for the brain to process numbers on a good to bad scale where as when i swapped to an bar/needle type gauge it was so much simpler to just look at, yep it's in the middle, happy days

Yep, I agree Joel, analog is definately easier to read at a glance. On the subject of digital, a trike I work on fitted a cheap egay set of gauges.....they are sooo very bad, oil press and temp inaccurate, tach never stable enough to read....useless....but they do look pretty, and the readout is colour matched to the paint.

sorry guys, the idea I had wasn't so much digital gauges, rather somethig more like bar graphs on a mini LCD panel, so its still an analogue gauge, it just had a little more flexibility than 52mm pods effectively. The idea needs way more thought though.

Digital instruments? Thats like soooo 1980s. A perfect match for Lady Di haircuts, Wayfarer sunglasses, leg warmers, Pac-Man and Duran Duran albums. Set the flux capacitor to 1985 !

Audi tried a completely digitial dash in the original (Ur) quattro in about 1982 - it was crap. Everyone hated it and soon they went back to normal analogue instruments. Look in every brand new VW/Audi sold today - analogue instruments without exception. Even the Golf R, a far higher-tech vehicle than any Beetle.

What extra information or 'flexibilty' do you expect from little blinking lights that you won't get from a proper gauge?

Proper VDO gauges can be ordered through any Repco outlet.

The Space Shuttle cockpit has been modernised and as mostly modern Boeing-style 'glass' instruments. Still some analogue instruments in the upper panel.

B-52 bomber pilots - with 8 engines to look after - rely on analogue instruments.

Gotta love the 80s LCD dash clusters, funny i was only chatting with a mate about them the other night.
My pop had a TN magna elite with the LCD dash but the all time classic was those Ghastly Subaru Vortexs

I remember sitting in the drivers seat of the one dads work mate had just bought new back in 1988 thinking holy shit this is high tech

These days just looks like a terrible 80s Sega game screen shot

Cam, if you like the digital clusters I was looking at one from Acewell for mine cos I like the 100% accuracy of an electronic speeedo and hate not having a trip meter but custom building an Lbug dash to mount one is more effort than im prepared to input but they would fit a smoothed flat screen dash beautifully
