VW in New Zealand - what's happening?
Phil74Camper - August 24th, 2010 at 11:33 AM

I browsed the latest Black and White data book recently, which contains all the Australian auto stats for 2009.

In the 'overseas' section, it lists annual sales by make in a number of different countries. I noticed something interesting with regard to VW sales in New Zealand:

2003 - 2,456
2004 - 3,323
2005 - 4,410
2006 - 5,841
2007 - 7,120
2008 - 6,351
2009 - 3,834

Are there any Kiwis here? What has happened with VW sales in NZ since 2007? Good growth up to then, but bombed in the last couple of years. Surely not the Global Financial Crisis.

In New Zealand you can buy the VW Scirocco - and a Euro-spec Golf R with 199 kW, not the 182 kW detuned version we get. Yet our VW sales continue to grow and are on track for 35,000 this year, an all-time record. What is wrong with New Zealanders?
