why skinny wheels
ian.mezz - August 26th, 2010 at 07:27 PM

I have seen lotsss of cars lately with mag wheels on the front and steel stock wheels or skinny wheels on the back why????

helbus - August 26th, 2010 at 07:36 PM

For the look. Usually seen on 10 plus year old Falcons and Commodores with a P plate stuck to the back window. They would be in the top ten list of cars that you would call 'Cop bait'

Burn outs .. No point flogging the shit out of your expensive tires and rims when you can have the same fun on stockies.

Joel - August 26th, 2010 at 07:39 PM

stolen from car boots at shopping centre car parks

hellbugged - August 26th, 2010 at 11:53 PM

because they do burnouts on the good ones before they relize they can't afford to replace the scragged tyres

Nothing like that in the country.. I hope...

Maybe they buy used wheels and tyres at wreckers cheap..??

about 8 years ago, a local car testing Mechanic lost His licence to pass cars... as some of the cars He had passed were pulled up a couple of days later with balding illegal tyres on their cars.

The cause was found later on ---

Turned out... the youngsters were hiring good wheels and tyres from the local wreckers for a day... lol

then putting the old ones back on.. lol

Now that is seriously funny ... and the most likely story.
The other one is that they don't have enough power under the bonnet to turn the grippy tires  (not true for most)

The front ones never wear out cos they're never on the ground

polak - August 27th, 2010 at 08:48 PM

there are many reasons as listed but one very main reason is the burnouts.... cheapies on the back, just pop her in 2nd and have no tires in under 1 minute 30.... hehehe.... its a young and stupid thing... last time i did it was 6 yrs ago... must be getting old :P

1303Steve - August 27th, 2010 at 10:03 PM

Hi

Beside looking like cop bait its actually illegal to have smaller wheels on the back than the front.

Steve

Its a look some go for now, or cause they cant get their hektic rims to fit.

If you have rims on the front and stovkers on the back you get pulled over all the time around here, but tis the look im going for with my next car, rims on front stockers on back, to give the impression i skid everywhere

donn - August 27th, 2010 at 10:18 PM

Illegal I can understand if it's rear wheel drive, if it's front wheel drive I would think the opposite, but then I'm an old fart and just can't see the sense in it either way.

You're not allowed different sized wheels front to back. You can't legally have 14s on the front and 15s on the back.

Show me the law which says so! Plenty of cars have staggered tyres and are engineered with compliance plates, even many factory cars use different sized tyres front to back.

if its factory then its legal, if no then you have to get it engineered to be legal. from memory you can't go anymore than 15 wider than standard on up one size but they both have to match! i used to get pulled over when i first got the baja on the road and the first thing they looked at was tyres, i have 10'5's on the rear(15) and 235(15) on the front. i have to carry a copy of my report with me at all times to show tham its all good. they don't bother anymore as all the local cops know me and the car and know its 100% legal but when the out of towners come in over the holidays i always get at least one pull me over and throw the tyres size law at me.

steff..........

The latest craze here the Fxxkwits get up to-out to the industrial area with heaps of bread crates in their front wheel drive heaps-put a bread crate under each back wheel, pull on the hand brake and go crazy. They eventually wear thru the crate and end up with big flat spots on the rear tyres-Tyre sellers here just love it.

Tray drifting nothing new.

Me and mates used to do that nearly 10 years ago with maccas trays under the corolla before they started making them outta plastic

Ah the days of being young and irresponsible

Haha. I used maccas trays with my corolla too. I think everyone with a corolla had some spare maccas trays in the back of their car. Good times.

On the coast here you see heaps of vans and utes with the big chrome wheels/low profile tyres on the front and stock 14" wheels on the rear, not only is this for the burnouts but also it is harder to get "load rated" low profile tyres for the bigger diameter wheels. The front tyres of utes have a different load rating to the rear as that is where all the weight is.

You are wrong in saying that statement.

so its not just in Newcastle, its all over the place.
would they feel a bit over steery?

Pollywaffle - August 28th, 2010 at 05:54 PM

I love seeing people doing it to front wheel drive cars too. Makes me laugh so much

mitchellgolds - August 28th, 2010 at 06:12 PM

Pollywaffle: Their excuse would probably be that it gives them better traction on the front and less rolling resistance on the rear. Bahahaha

I have got maccas trays in the back of my charade.

They dont last long at all on the road but grass they are good for ages.

helbus - August 28th, 2010 at 07:19 PM

It is to make it look like you do burnouts, even if you don't.

Burnout is the practice of keeping a vehicle stationary (or close to) and spinning both of its big wide wheels using heaps of torque and horsepower, if your car has the real grunt to do it, causing the tires to heat up and smoke resulting from friction. Weak cars use oil or skinny tyres or one wheel only

Skid is what a locked up brake or push bike wheel does. Not a good way to describe what a burnout really is.

jsheppard64 - August 28th, 2010 at 07:49 PM

burnouts, drifts... they're art
but it's called hoon when you do it on public road

there's a japanese proverb "life should be spent sideways"
... i have no source for that
