Instaling a type1 motor alone!
kustomkool - July 19th, 2003 at 02:02 AM

Today I put my motor in my beetle[thanks to skewy for helping me pick it up].I did it by myself who else has had to instal a type 1 motor by themselves.I had to do it in a iner city alleyway with a shity trolleyjack with 1 jackstand. It took me 1 whole hour the hardest part was engaging the driveshaft and flywheel without a moveable jack.Who else has had to do something like this?:)

yep, i'll put my hand up. got up at 5.30 am dropped the motor out of the kombi, fixed up the rear nut on the flywheel and put it back in and went for a surf at 6.30 am. getting better every time i take it out and put it in. just that bloody bolt over the top of the housing, have to think of a better way to get that tight!!! cheers, fish

I've put motors in and out of my VW's by myself heaps of times. The hardest thing I've found is getting a complete motor (with all tinware, generator etc.) off the engine stand by myself.

PHAT BUG - July 19th, 2003 at 07:16 AM

From driving into the garage, pull the motor out and sitting the motor on the bench, with a lot of practice ive got it down to 12mins.

Wow,!! This is fast work guys,
So if its that simple my vw mechanic shouldnt be charging more than an hours labour doing mine,?? Yeah right !!!
Ill let ya know when I get the bill.

With the old split screen kombis and early Bay kombis I used to sit an oil drum under the motor, took off the rear bumper & the piece where the deck closed onto undid the bolts and pused the kombi forward worked on the motor wher ir was then all I had to do was push the kombi backwards.

Secoh - July 19th, 2003 at 10:37 AM

yeah done it a couple of times now. I couldnt balance it on the el cheapo jack the last time (time before that I had it balanced on the spare on a brake drum on the jack...precarious :D)

I removed the exhaust and manifold and distributor before lifting it in or out then assembeled all that in situ. made it much lighter and easier.

the first time I tried to put the engine back in my old 68 I just couldnt tget the engine to mesh on the gbox spline..
my dad took one look at it and 2 minutes later we were bolting it together
it gets easier everytime you do it though
in engine pull competitions in america they do it in 2-3 minutes with 2 guys

i too will put my hand up to doing it alone... for a while on a regular basis (grrrr). i so miss the simplicity of a 36hp. out, new clutch plate and back in, in less time than it took to adjust the clutch afterwoods (darn double jam nut clutch adjustment). it was so much easier than a late motor with extractors, twin carbs etc in an early engine bay.

I`ve fitted side rear windows to a beetle with one arm after a motorbike accident.
Had a little help from one of my knees.
;)

68AutoBug - July 21st, 2003 at 02:02 AM

I hope the blood didn't get on the interior of the beetle... lucky He still had two knees... But as someone said -
What dedication - there is a lesson to be learnt there - keep off Motor bikes if you are restoring a beetle... - because sooner or later You will need 2 arms and 2 legs (or knees) :bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce:bounce

68AutoBug - July 21st, 2003 at 02:09 AM

Except pick the engine itself up off the ground or off the jack... as I don't have the rear valance panel on any more, I just push the car away from the engine....
My Best Friend when working on My Beetle is a pair of long nose Visegrips
(correct spelling) they are my other hand if these two can't reach... they are like the brother I never had....:D:D:D

Thats cos ya keep YELLIN at everybody:D

Spook - July 21st, 2003 at 04:00 AM

Never had to do it to a stock beetle.

Got the kombi down to 30 minutes.
The buggy & the baja I used to have took less.
There is a certain advantage to be able to pick an engine up & put it on the box...

geodon - July 21st, 2003 at 06:17 AM

'56 oval- couldn't adjust tappets- one of the rocker pedestals had split- eng had to come out- impoverished uni student- Pound Motors (VW agents) wanted the equivalent of 6 months part time work to fix it.
I made a trolley out of a cheese box on 4 castors (I've still got it I think) & got the height set using thin slats of wood so the car just rested its engine on it with the wheels on the ground. Disconnected everything & pulled the eng & then using only the VW jack & cross stacked bricks, lifted it right up inthe air so I could roll the eng out out. Bought a 2nd hand head & reversed everything.
I must have been desperate!!
