Where to buy turn key VW engine
vicelore - September 16th, 2010 at 04:11 PM

Hey guys.

Well been looking around a bit at retailers that make high performance VW engines.

Read about PobJoy being a maker of them but there website has very little info on products or costs..

In the future i will be looking for VW motor for my T3 preferably a turbo 2.2L or something like that..

Can you guys suggest places that do a walk in walk out engine swap Or atleast sell a ready to be installed engine, that will get the mirrors shaking on my T3 :)

Preferably in Vic/melbourne

Cheers Vice

I saw them on here last week, although I have no first hand experience. Prices seem reasonable.

edit : Yeah they are in Sydney. Sorry.

Looks like a good start.. Cheers Ben.

A proformance Type3 engine is not as easy to build as a type1. Any proformance type3 engine will be a full custom job. A 2.2L turbo would have to be $15000-$20000 if you are paying someone to build it. Although I have heard of people spending more.

My max limit in my head was around the 10k mark fully ready to go.. Maybey im off the mark..

Really dont wanna go down the suby route and keep it VW.. Hrm..

Could you run a Type 1 with the engine cover removed ? I had seen a custom turbo setup in the red type 3 like that.. dont know much about that engine tho..

Cheers Vice

Vice, My turbo 2.2 type1 motor cost well over your cost figure. you have to remember you also need the gearbox and computer, brakes to stop, pumps for the water, radiator for intercoolers and intercoolers, oil coolers, throttle body, turbo oil pump, all custom piping, stronger cv's and axles and the list goes on.
Be prepared to blow your budget.

Try volkmann art in Melbourne. They will set you on the right path.

A type1 engine in a Type3 will not cool properly. For $10000 you may be able to get some sort of Quality 2L+ carb engine.

You have to set a budget and see what you can get for that.

Lots of things to consider

Are going to drive it every day?

Do you want heaters?

Do you want to keep std gear ratios?

Do you want it all under the std hatch?

The list goes on.

Type IV , already aluminium, oil filter, better cooling heads and you can take it out to near 3ltr.
stock crank with 103's gives you 2366 capacity "h" beam rods nice cam 1800 size heads wil get you some nice reliable power n torque
or 105 x 82 =2840cc not that muliplication but combo;)
And you could squeeze it under the lid with factory fuel injection but bigger throttle body

Just get someone to build a low comp 2ltr type 1 with turbo cam,

and then bolt this puppy on from the states (with our good dollar and all)

http://www.vwturbokits.com/

No listing for the type 3 exactly, but for the ghias, looking at $2295 USD, includes everything, exhaust, turbo, turbo carb, inlet manifold and all relevant hardware.

again though, you'd wanna convert to upright for this. I'm sure theres a way in the type 3 to do it appropriately. The hot air exits the right way, just gotta work out a way to duct the cold air to the back of the fan shroud. :tu:

That's the main problem, type3 engines arent sealed into the engine bay like all other aircooled vws, the fresh air ducting to the stock fan is at the opposite end of the engine to a type1 engine
even if you get fresh air to the fan you would still have the carb/s sucking in hot air too, stock aircleaner uses the same outside air as the fan

Makes me cringe when i see upright motors and porsche shrouds in type3s

yea it would certainly involve some heavy duty ducting no doubt to everything.... would be alot of work.

Then you wonder how to form scoops and inlets/outlets/sealed air boxes/filters etc. whilst still being aesthetically pleasing. Bug catches on the rear of cars just don't look all that great... :( in my opinion.
