Classic have the cheap vacuum advance distributors on sale again. (Not the 009 types, ie mechanical advance)

Has anyone bought one of these in the past?
And are they happy with it?

I have been running one of those cheap CVD vac distributors for a while now. I dropped a Pertronix module in it when it was installed. I have had no problems with it at all. It works as it should. The mechanical advance side of it is identical to a 009.

That being said I just bought one of those adjustable CB Magnaspark II distributors for the ability to play around with the curve. Aussie $ is going great atm so its a good time to buy from the USA. The MagnasparkII was $140 + $30 shipping from VW parts Unlimited. Good deal on a made in the USA part.

ive got one in my bus ,the points werent the greatest, but once changed no probs

dont know about those, but got one that came from CBB in penrith and it worked a treat, fitted it to a customers car.

I got an ebay a new 009 replica for $24 on egay ...

can't tell ya how good it is yet lol.

I too got a Bosch SVDA from aircooled.net with pertronix unit for $220.00 delivered 2 weeks ago, I ve been warned to stay clear of cheap units.

I have one in my beetle. Wouldn't run with the crap points in it. Runs well now with pertronix ignition module.
I just removed a cheap 009 dist from a kombi this week which had so much slop in it the engine hardly ran at all.
It seems there is a fair bit of variation in quality. (Between totally useless to fairly good, but not great)
However, I saw a vacuum advance distributor on veedubpartsunlimited advertised as a genuine Bosch (?) for about US$170.
I am planning to bring one in and try it.

Waltermitty, old dsitributors can be fully recoed/refurbished to original spec's, in Melbourne. Also the vac units can be done - are sent away for rebuilding (takes longer as they send them elsewhere).

This may cost as much or even more than the new-cheap unit, but should give a "good as neu" and hopefully original-Deutsche unit (if you have the correct one in rebuildable condition to start with).
Have had two done so far and have been very pleased with results.

the aftermarket distributors SVDA and 009s all vary in quality..

from unusable to OK...

the distributor bodies may be made OK but
the balancers and springs may be poor quality or poor fit..
resulting in poor performance or not being able to time them at all...

I have also heard of people getting OK performance from the el cheapos .. luck of the draw....

One box = rubbish
next box = OK ????

Bosch ones are always OK...
The SVDA bosch distributors can advance up to 40 degrees BTDC when accelerating with maximum vacuum...
then settling down to 30-32 degrees BTDC...

I just bought an SVDA, but I'm having trouble finding some fitting and tuning instructions. The usually on-the-ball guys at aircooled.net haven't got back to my enquiries from late last week. Might anyone have an information sheet or any tips on fitting?
