Ok.. I have a type 3. The upper shock bolt hole/thread on one side has a broken bolt. It is not coming out no matter what I try. If i were to drill the old bolt out, get a long bolt then what I was going to use (and not use the thread inside the shock mount) and use a high tensile bolt, washer and nyloc nut on the end... can I do this?

Basically I want to not both into the shock mount and instead bolt through and use a nut at the other end.. thoughts?

No one would know otherwise anyways to spot it as a mod, and they would have to be pretty psyko of a vw nerd and a complete nazi for you replacing a 40 yr old thread with a bolt and nut.

Don't stress man.

My IRS Beetle has bolts and nuts at both ends of the shocks, which is basically the same rear-end as a Type 3, so if the factory is okay with it then it should be perfectly fine.

great.. My only problem is that one will be standard (bolt into shock mount, no nut) and the other not. Ill try it.. if they get me to change them both to take a nut and bolt that will be ok.. seems like the easiest way to get the broken bolt out... painful bloody thing

the thing is i had a 12.9 high tensile bolt broken in a thread once and well...
it managed to dull all my drill bits...
i ended up welding something on it and it was easy to turn out.. the heat help loosen it out a bit

I don't run shocks.
