vlad01 - October 13th, 2010 at 07:18 PM

did you mix and match lifter manufacture with different cam manufacture?

greedy53 - October 13th, 2010 at 09:00 PM

no it was in a 76 van said recoed not that i take much interest in word of mouth.it sounds very like the cam failing on the 1800
oh! i hate vw utes

vwvic - October 13th, 2010 at 09:14 PM

What oil are you using ?

vlad01 - October 13th, 2010 at 09:25 PM

if mismatch lifters and cams are used then the metallurgy are very likely to be different.
Which always results in premature cam or lifer failure, depending on which is the softer metal. They must be the same metal/hardness in order to last any length of time.

the problem is starting to look like a valve has dropped hope thats all as i have a new head sitting the shed,
i may only need t scrounge up a 2 lt barrel and piston
oil was straight 30 been using it for years
it's jut depressing that is 3 engines in 18 months and the van has never given me any grief

greedy53 - October 17th, 2010 at 08:43 PM

well for any interested the bloody thing has a floating valve seat only damage is just the seat, so happy drinking again but it does explaen the trouble i have been having with the tuning for the last year

vlad01 - October 17th, 2010 at 09:46 PM

that would of been caused by over heating at some stage.
