Hi All, at ReVolks show in Geelong last weekend, I was quized about the insides of the Corvair engine, here are some pics that I took during those
couple of late nights right up to show day,

I notice that there are six ports to take the exhaust away, but only four for intake????
If this is correct how does it ensure equal distribution between cylinders?

Hi, it does not ensure equal distribution, but does work very well, the 140hp corvair motor comes stock from the factory with four single barrell carbs, 2 primary & 2 secondary. I have another vair motor that I am in the process of milling off the complete manifold and grafting on tripple throat down draft weber carbs which get all things even ( look tuff too) have a look in my other posts about overhaulin, there are a pair of tripple throats just resting on a corvair motor, thanks for your interest cheers Frank
Consider that the exhaust ports are three straight out, and the inlet is two into a manifold that has three ports into the head chambers.
So it is still three in and three out of the head of course, and the manifold should be designed to fill and flow evenly through.
Look at the old V8's that used to run triple carbs! 1 Primary and two secondary.
Nice work - can you give a little more info regarding the Porsche shroud setup - was it a custom fabricated fibreglass shroud or something off the
shelf? Any internal air deflector vanes? The reason I ask is my dad has been toying with idea of going that route with his Corvair convertible.

Hi there Al, the Porsche conversion is not new, infact it is was around in the eighties, I had one of these setups way back then and flopped the fibreglass housing and still to this day have the mould to reproduce the shroud. There is a bit of fabrication work to be sorted out, but nothing major, if you want to pursue this conversion, pm me, and I will guide you on how to do the conversion your self, you will need to sniff around your neck of the woods for a Porsche wrecker to obtain the fan/alternator set up. I can lay up a fan shrouding for you and even fabricate the whole shootin match so all you need to do is install it. Thirty years back, I too thought that there should be some air deflectors but never had any heating issues, even on a hot summers day. So in answer to your question, there are no internal deflectors, there is a gentleman in the states by the name of Starr Cooke who has been around corvairs for many moons, he sells the complete kit on ebay, starting price is $1500 usd errr ummmm well thats $1500 AUD !!!! but you still need to get it shipped to the land of OZ. just go into ebay usa and type in item number 110561244701. cheers Frank

In the first picture, is that a sump or sump plate? And is it an original set-up with those vanes for cooling (I'd assume)?

Oh hang about, if your dad has a standard rotation corvair motor, (runs anti-clockwise) this set up will not work. Porsche engines run clock wise. sorry for blowing wind into your sails, I build my engines to run clockwise for fit ups into vw"s cheers Frank
The sump is an after market black anodised alloy deep sump with the cooling fins, internally, the sump has about 40 or so, 50mm fingers protruding into the engine oil to transfer the heat to the outside surface, I have matching rocker covers but they will only fit into a kombi installation. The corvair sump is the lower part of the engine cases and only has a flat mild steel plate as a sump cover. pic 3 shows the exposed sump with oil pick up, if using a deep sump, the oil pick up needs to be extended lower. thanks for your interest, cheers Frank
that is a rather interesting engine. The castings on the heads look rather rough?

Wow....interesting to see a 'Vair engine out and apart. I've only seen mine in my Corvair. Runs beautifully so has never needed to be out...as yet.

You see the odd Corvair in Bewitched or other early USA TV shows...
Very interesting also that they run anti clockwise.... normally

Hey guys, get into youtube and type in " corvair 140hp with a kick, nothing crazy, vroom vroom" make sure you turn your volume right up and then imagine that sound coming out of ya Vdub!! and its bloody air cooled!!!!!!!!
