to buy or not to buy? 63 rag top
jvans5434 - October 16th, 2010 at 10:45 AM

Howdy gents,

I'm a relative newbie here and to the beetle, my basis understanding of the beetle comes from what i have learned from my 73 lowlight ( transition model) and what i read in VWM ( avid reader)

A mate of mine has given me his 63 ragtop for the weekend and after an unsuccessful e-bay auction, he want's me to buy it.

What are these worth?

factory ragtop!

rare as hen's teeth right?

is basically a rat rod - I've seen worse rust on beetles... been re-sprayed yrs ago. needs new doors/ panels ( all hav dents in them) but i am a confident back yard panel beater... so body doesn't worry me.

It's a 63 - so king pin front end with adjusters, and it's been lowered a bit.

but everything rattles on the car - suspension wise. was told the front end was tightened up. - what do i look for?

Has comfy but aftermarket seats. and aftermarket puke steering wheel. Would prefer original everything.

somebody has tried to do a cal look on this beetle, so very basic, no overriders on bumpers and chrome is showing it's age ( if original )

obviously the engine is not original

engine no:H1115100
chassis no:5040571

it leaks oil - not sure how bad, just going to go for a drive momentarily and park over newspaper to see...

Its most likley a 1500 single port with newer brosol carby but has a flat spot in the lower rpm area - was told the jets need drilling???
but it seems to go alright.

empi short shifter - hasn't been aligned properly? hard to find 1&2nd, and occasionally jumps out of 3rd... apparently all occured after empi shifter installed...what does that sound like to you?

nice empi 8 spokes..

going for a drive, will put on jackstands later this arvo, let me know what you think and what to look for especially...

he wants 3 and change....

worth it?

with that chassis no. I think it's a 64 model
and put the old gear shift stick back in and see if that rectifies the problem otherwise there could be a problem with the gear box
And what's the name on the rag top?
maybe a bit to much money

Would want to be a Golde rag top
should have a chrome handle with the name on it

More likely it is a graft in job??

Sounds like the white one from ebay, needs a lot of $$$

jvans5434 - October 16th, 2010 at 11:58 AM

yep, the white one, - how do you know it needs alot of $ - did you see it in the flesh? yes it does need alot of money, that's why i want to know how much these go for typically...

It's functional.... keep it as a rat till i can afford to sink some money into her...

A rag top clip is worth at least $1000

Then add a ratty 1964

Yeah - $3k
Bargain - no, but do you want it??

They certainly aint common, but they also cost more to repair than a plain steel roof

Hi there and welcome. I know it didn't make reserve in the recent ebay add and if I'm correct weren't the heater channels rusted. These are a pretty big job and critical importance to make sure all door frames are still a-lined. Not making reserve on ebay should tell you something, as VW Beetle with that rag top would normally sell easily.

just my thoughts, but even $1000 for a goldie rag top roof section wont make the whole car worth $3000+.

Not trying to ruin a sale for the seller and good luck with your decision.
