Over the years I've called my cars by many names - none that I can put on this forum - but I've never named any of them:D

vlad01 - October 23rd, 2010 at 09:13 AM

I just call them what they are. eg. the notch, the EB, the VP, the ford GT etc...

I tried to name cars but I just can't, doesn't work. I think its a woman thing as i noticed nearly all women name their cars.

Yes ,that seems to be the case its a girly thing ,if you name your car the name must say something about it like lLow Bug ,Split Personality, Type threesome ,Karman Sutra ,rather than the name of your mothers second cousin who had one just like it.

my drag bugs called BUZ

Paulc1964au - October 23rd, 2010 at 11:13 AM

Yeah not sure if i should post now lol

So I named my beetle Rosie well my daughter thought of the name actually.

The reason she named her Rosie is because my first car was a 67 VW and i used to driver around with a cassette deck playing ACDC.

Anyway I took my son and daughter this year to the ACDC concert and told my daughter I should have named her Rosie after "Whole lotta Rosie" so of course when I bought the beetle my daughter suggested Rosie

t_tuffnut - October 23rd, 2010 at 11:48 AM

I've named my two beetles after things I've found in them during their strip down.

My 66 is called Cosmo, as I found a tow receipt made out to a Cosmo in the glove box, the 73 is called Floyd, as there was a Pink Floyd cassette in the back of it. Somehow these names have shaped how I view the cars, and added to their character. All my cars have ended up being named and I think it is a good thing.

I had a falcon that was hard to name for ages, until it's computer went crazy and made it dangerous to drive - It was then named HAL (as in 2001 Space odyssey).

Could be wishy washy thinking on my behalf, but it helps me to have a little more respect for them, as they are no longer just a machine to transport me from a to b. Kinda like how people get in a "Dog Psychologist" to talk to their dogs. All they do is BS a conversation with the dog, then tell the owners how to train it correctly and set up routines. Gets the owners to do the right thing under the guise of therapy for the dog. Believe it or not, but people pay good money for that service! (not me, I swear!)

I know that I am setting myself up for a serious dig, but that's my opinion anyway.

My vans name. Is brandy because it drove me
to drink and my teardrop camper is penny because thats all the money I was allocated to.build it

bugsandoil - October 23rd, 2010 at 01:40 PM

We named our 62.5 bug Mary, because she was a one owner from a deceased estate car and Miss Mary ____ was the original owner,.. she managed never to have an accident in her. That's pretty good going we think. So we named the car in her honour.

ROFL, this is hilarious.

I'm man enough to admit to having a car with a name. My first Beetle was named by a friend of mine, who called it Bertie after the Bertie Beetle character from the showbags/chocolates. I refer to my current one simply as 'the red Beetle' at the moment. Some have suggested that it should be called The Red Baron but I don't really like this idea.

ryana89 - October 24th, 2010 at 08:55 AM

My car has the initials VAGarage on the top of the windscreen (previous owners VW buisness).
Due to this the car is now commonly reffered to as "The Vadge" amongst friends:D
But I like to follow the K.I.S.S rule and generally call it the Golf or VW.

vw54 - October 24th, 2010 at 09:44 AM

I thought it was only a Melbourne thing

h - October 24th, 2010 at 09:52 AM

I only call em by their model ie 54 or T5 or the plate I have on it like HMMM bus
I'm flat out remembering peoples names

penguin - October 24th, 2010 at 06:54 PM

Nope - not a girl thing

my first car, a 76 beetle, was called Sebastian (after Sebastian Coe) as he was good at long distance runs - Canberra to Bris in 12hrs was the best.

The current square is called Osama as my licence plate is 911-IMH.

Imagine what would happen if KOC met VAG?

You tried to insult me last week by accusing me of being from south of the border, but it turns out it's everywhere!!

My boring daily drivers don't get names, because they are basically just tools, but when I got the Beetle, I followed the rules of Pete Wood's wife, which stipulate that the name must use the letters from the numberplate. So a G and a W didn't leave me many options, so Gwendolyn she is.

She doesn't always get called that, sometimes just 'the Beetle', but given that it is more than 'just a car' it's nice it has a name, and all my friends and work colleagues ask me about her by name, which is kind of funny.

Which is why our Beetle just had to be called the KOC. It was the numberplate that made us do it.

1971dubber - October 25th, 2010 at 08:04 AM

I have personalized plates so do I have to call my car my name?

A baby VW perhaps:smilegrin:

vlad01 - October 25th, 2010 at 06:15 PM

then it would be BUB

bnicho - October 26th, 2010 at 01:52 PM

My modern cars usually don't get names, because they are too boring. But the old cars always do.

My Beetle is called "Olive" after my wife read the paint code sticker under the bonnet - "Martini Olive". That name has well and truly stuck, even our friends and neighbours refer to the car as Olive.

Similarly:
My Moke is called Mopoke as a shortened version of a mate calling it "Moke-with-no-poke".
My Mini Traveller is called Trixie.
The Corona Coupe is called Corrie.

VictoriaBelle - October 26th, 2010 at 07:47 PM

My '74 L bug is called Pumpkin - because she's big round and (funnily enough) orange!
My '61 bettle is called Victoria Belle - because we drove (from QLD) to Victoria to pick her up and she looked blue in the pictures (bluebell)

Come to think of it, I've only ever named my VW's! :)
