Did anyone catch the doco on sbs tonight. A french guy drove the transamazonian highway in brazil. Quite boring actually all depressingly monotone dialogue in subtitles. But the photography was pretty good, beetles everywhere.

The best part was the thing he drove in for part of the way. it was an early model splitty that had a late model bay window front on it. it looked very weird, like someone had raided the leftover parts bin.

Has anyone heard about these things.

These Kombis were made in Mexico, Here are a couple of pics of one I found in a wrecking yard in New Zealand,
They were sold in NZ by VW in the early 80's, and are very weird, wide 5 drum brakes all round, 1600 twin port engine, IRS rear suspension with frame horns like a splitty and a Beetle type gearbox but with a real beefy case. RHD too!
