Bumper removal - unroadworthy?
kieranweston - January 11th, 2011 at 08:51 AM

Hi all, if I remove my front and rear beetle bumpers and weld the bracket holes up or install T-Bar brackets will it fail a roadworthy?? I am in NSW, thanks

tbars yes they fall in to the dangerous protrusion category.
running without bumpers is kinda a grey area. if you really want to know ring the tech support line at the rta and ask. they will give the straight answer but it may be the one you dont want to hear.

The word from another forum is that T-Bars are illegal but people run them with no issues, bumper removal doesnt seems to be a problem, the main RTA test is to walk around the vehicle and if you knock your leg on something sticking out you might fail, but havent heard of anyone failing a roadworthy for it and I guess the only thing that will stick out is the exhaust (in that case get a hideaway)

what happens if you coat the ends of the T bars in a dense foam/rubber :tu:

I wish that one would get enforced on tow bars, my shins would be grateful.

Looks like a car that never even had bumpers :tu:

Kieran as I said on samba its not legal on paper but depends whos inspecting.
100s of people have run them for years and not had hassles but it doesnt mean its legal.

Falls under the same category as eyebrows and decklid stands offs.
Niether are legal either but people everywhere run them
I got pinged years ago for running eyebrows but not upset,
eyebrows on latemodel cars = fail.
Bonus fail points awarded if they tilted on an angle to look even more stupid

Well if I was a pedestrian I'd rather get bowled over by a beetle without bumpers....

and really would hate to be hit by a T bar...

regulations state if there is anything protruding from Your car...

better to add bumpers then take them off...
OR
have nothing...

As said there have been beetles running around for many years with T bars or No bumpers.....

depends on the GUY with the Pen and paper.... lol

LEE

other thing You can do is ask the mechanic before hand....

Pumba - January 14th, 2011 at 04:30 PM

I have a set of T bars here for a 68 on if your interested.

bajachris88 - January 14th, 2011 at 08:56 PM

someone should make dense rubberised chrome t bars!

sander288 - January 15th, 2011 at 09:53 AM

I got rejected for not having a rear bumper but it does depend on whos checking the car.

as far as pedestrian safety goes a solid metal bar vs more solid metal could be argued; in either case if your hit by a bug then expect broken shins!
