Who was the dickhead that told me this
Camo - January 13th, 2011 at 03:18 PM

I have my Beetle body back on the floor pan and someone told me not to put holes in the floor pan seal where the bolts pass through. They told me to just poke a screw driver through when the body is back on and then put the bolts in.

Well, I have put the screwdriver through and can feel the bolt hole but do you think I can get the F%#@en things to start.

I understand that the rubber will be sealed around the bolt, but it has made life hard. Sorry, I am just letting off some steam and to see what others have done.

Not happy Jan (Kev)

P.S. I have a feeling the perpetrator will know whom he is !!!!

barls - January 13th, 2011 at 03:24 PM

if you can see where it is could you get in there with something like a craft knife or similar and just cut the offending rubber out ie clear the hole

Aussie Dubbin - January 13th, 2011 at 03:37 PM

Shit eh! don't you hate it when you take someones advise and if f&^ks up in your face.
NO suggestiopns but what barls says sounds good. Get a long pointy tipped blade and a a few spares. Craft shops sell them on a pencil type handle

beetleboyjeff - January 13th, 2011 at 03:57 PM

Would it work if you heated up a spare bolt or a piece of rod of the correct diameter, and melted the hole through with that?

hellbugged - January 13th, 2011 at 04:08 PM

hole punch would be the go?

beetleboyjeff - January 13th, 2011 at 04:15 PM

Or a drill. Just would have to be carefull not to drill into the threads. Maybe a depth stop on the drill bit?

HappyDaze - January 13th, 2011 at 04:24 PM

Kev, are you using the correct bolts, i.e. the ones with the pointed ends?

Sides - January 13th, 2011 at 04:32 PM

I had a similar problem when I did mine... I just persevered, and eventually got them started.

Like Greg has said tho.. make sure you have the pointy bolts !!!

Good Luck.

:tu:

Camo - January 13th, 2011 at 05:34 PM

Thanks all for your thoughts. I did preserver as Dave suggested, I have the correct pointed bolts and the help of an air ratchet made the difference.

I have now calmed down, so to the dickhead that told me what to do - sorry

Kev

ian.mezz - January 13th, 2011 at 05:53 PM

ian.mezz - January 13th, 2011 at 05:56 PM

o yeah did you try the bolts before you put the body on to clean any paint out of the bolt holes.

Camo - January 13th, 2011 at 05:57 PM

Ian, can I borrow some of your KY then

I now know why I always have a problem getting it in and screwing all the way to the bottom ;)

vw54 - January 14th, 2011 at 06:09 AM

So have you tightened them down in the correct sequence ???

and not over tightened them as well or you can twist the body and your door gaps wont be any good

Camo - January 14th, 2011 at 12:54 PM

Gee Dave, you nominated yourself as the culprit.

As I said at 6.34pm (this thread), sorry. I just had a dose of the shits, my sister brought my daughter home from the movies and the wife turned up at the same time I was trying to get the bolts in. Not a good combination.

I only have about 6 in so far and I haven't tightened them. Are you still talking to me and going to divulge the sequence for tightening them down and to what torque.

Kev.

P.S. Dave, what it the go with your new avatar. Are you telling us that you are having a change and getting into something else.

Mr Bubble Head - January 14th, 2011 at 02:56 PM

Buy/get a soldering iron with a good sized tip and let it heat up for a good 10 mins off ya go doing one by one. Tip: do one hole then start the bolt go to the opersite hole do it start the bolt etc etc.
Starting the bolt stops the rubber setting in the thread also it gives the iron time to heat back up for the next hole. trust me its easy as.

dont use anything apart from the pointy bolts.

I wouldn't go as far as Kiss him Kev....

but I believe that would have been the way at the factory..
and that is why lots of bolts are pointed....
even in japanese cars...

Well sounds like the top is being connected to the bottom Kev..

body to chassis...

did You put a new bush in below the gearshifter in the tunnel
Kev?

Are You staying swing axle or CV Joints???

Hi

My soldering irons are My best tools lol...

I use them for all sorts of things....

20 to 60 watters....

that's what I would have used in the holes...

LEE

PS: its just that the soldering iron will smell like that for a while
lol...

PS: Yes, I'll have to look at Your album Kev...
