Hi guys,

So, the story goes like this. I have an uncle in the USA who is into his beetles and has been ever since I can remember. He picks up a Karmann convertible for peanuts with the intention to give a paint and a clean up and use as a daily.

After sometime he has decided he doesn't need it and has offered it to our family and it's cost will be basically getting it over here and tidying it up.

What would you say it would be worth with:

Fresh paint
Degrease and hotwash
Full tidy up inside and general knick knacks sorted
It's an injected '78 original Karmann Cab Beetle from California.
Will need a new roof, but uncle is happy to buy a new one at our cost and pop it inside the car before it sent over.

I'll bit and say a "good" right hand cab would be worth $10k - $15k

I guess my fathers concern once you add up all the costs of freight, hassle, paint, roof etc, if we do decide to part with it, if it is going to be worth our while. We've never imported a car from overseas before directly, so it can be a little daunting for a first timer!

Hang on - are you going to keep it??

You will struggle to get your money back if you convert it to RHD and try and sell it

You you WANT a L bug vert (and I would) then do it
If you think it is a bargain then think carefully

Can turn it into a nice fatty I reckon, so the intent is to keep it in the family as dad already has a mint restored '74 L-bug at home that hasn't even been registered since its restoration 5 years ago! He just likes looking at it and starting I think?

Just making sure that in the long run if we do decide to let it go at some point, we won't be behind the 8-ball I suppose? As long as we can recoup our funds the day it goes that is fine.
Not planning on converting it from a left hooker as there isn't much point since we don't have to do it for rego.

A nice attitude drop and fix the paint and it should be winner

Joel - Those two German look verts killed me! Very VERY nice! The paint on the green one is gorgeous!

Donn - Despite my post rest assured i'm no stranger to the car game (modified or standard) and if you choose your purchases wisely, be careful where and how you spend your money through a ring of old trusted contacts in the trade, you can almost ALWAYS recoup your costs, trust me on that one!

What I want to know is, how do you guys find space for all your toys?? We've already got 3 cars at home in Glen Waverley (Vic) with a double garage and i'd like a few more toys but without moving to the sticks with a big block of land and accompanying shed, I don't know where to store them!
It amazes me that some of you guys are lucky enough to have multiple project cars, show cars and daily drivers!

You don't buy a book and read the last page first, so why buy a bug and worry what you're going to get for it down the track?
Forget recouping the losses or reaping the winnings- just enjoy what was, and still is, a beautiful car.
