Brad - July 28th, 2003 at 10:37 AM

I am on the main Island of the Kingdom of Tonga Nuka'alofa.

Bizarre - July 28th, 2003 at 11:30 AM

WOW.... my brother just came back from a couple of stints in Tonga.

Some legal tax reform group i know crap about.

My construction manager will be there round the 9th Aug for a holiday.

"Interesting" place i have heard.
Have fun!!

jenz58 - July 28th, 2003 at 11:46 AM

Pics look a little like Samoa. Guess some of the islands are very similar.

Mmmm, I love the pace/ island time:cool::thumb

Enjoy the tinnies:beer

Brad - July 28th, 2003 at 12:51 PM

Let me tell you that Island Time Sucks when we build to Australian Time Lines...

Yep the locals think we are crazy working 10 hr days 6 days a week. Would be 7 but the locals don't let you DO ANYTHING on a sunday.

Robo - July 28th, 2003 at 01:24 PM

Hi Brad.
For the uninitiated, whats Island Time.
Rob...

Bizarre - July 28th, 2003 at 01:42 PM

How quick the locals do things.

It is VERY different to the way Aussies do things!!!

Robo - July 28th, 2003 at 01:58 PM

Thanks Blue
Australia's an Island isn't it? why dont we run on Island time?
Rob.......:beer:beer:beer

buzzbug - July 28th, 2003 at 02:30 PM

Brad - July 29th, 2003 at 06:00 AM

Yeah I am in the Army.... well sort of anyway. This week at least.. ;) Off to be a uni bum shortly !!!!

No more tropical paradise island and kicking back in the local bar

vw54 - July 29th, 2003 at 07:28 AM

Are you going to be a professional student again.

Brad - July 29th, 2003 at 07:32 AM

Yep, my current employer has seen fit to allow me to go to uni and finsh of my degree and then they will no doubt find a job which has nothing at all to do with my qualifications and give it to me.

Go to love the Government

:o:o

vw54 - July 29th, 2003 at 08:26 AM

I know that your 100 percent right there

Train you to specialise in some area then make you work in a totally unrelated place or job. Typical goverment

jenz58 - July 29th, 2003 at 09:44 AM

Thought I could see army greens in the pics

Would imagine the Tongans go to church Sundays and then have the family feast after, like the Samoans

Island time is great if your on holiday and wanting to get away from our pace of doing things. It can be very frustrating for some:alien

Must admit I love their chilled attitude and friendliness but then not had to work

Do they play lots of Reggae in their bars?:beer :D

So what are you building? Wharehouse?

Andy - August 28th, 2003 at 06:27 AM

Project must be nearing completion Brad,
Any more progress pics?
Or are you wasting your time on the net not doing contructive work :)
Cheers,
Andy :thumb

Brad - August 28th, 2003 at 06:38 AM

Well yeah it is moving along quite well. the structural steel is all up and we have begun the internal light steel frame walls. The external block walls are at about 80% and the structural glass arrives today for the foyer. We have about 16 working days left until we leave. Prior to leaving we need to achieve lock up which basically means the windows and doors are in, eternal walls finished, water and electrical are at rough in and the roof complete. We should make it but like everything in the building game it will be tight. All up we will have spent about $1 550 000 on her and she is rated to withstanding cyclonic winds and earthquakes. The design is such that it has its own ups and back up generator so even power outages will not effect her.

By the end of the project it will have taken us just under 60 days from slab height to lock up. With some luck it will be the last project I have to manage overseas and I look forward to spending some regular time in Australia.

Pic is from 24 Aug 03 but you get the idea.

Andy - August 28th, 2003 at 08:32 AM

Lookin' great mate :thumb If that's the 24th with now only 16 days left, that's f*#$ing tight alright.
Structural glass?? Interesting. Or is it a none load bearing wall?
I like how you refer to 'it' as 'her' and 'she'
Good luck!

Brad - August 28th, 2003 at 09:14 AM

Non load bearing, display wall only although it is teh front portico. It is structual casue of teh cyclonic and earthquake design req'd.

Andy - August 28th, 2003 at 01:06 PM
