Questrion: How much is my old 36hp worth??
benjicon - February 10th, 2011 at 09:53 AM

Hey guys,

So I am in the middle of trying to find a new / replacement engine for my beetle, as sad as it will be to take the original motor out of her, I really need to get the car back on the road and running reliably.

I am considering selling the old engine, 36hp, the engine number corresponds with the October 57 manufacture date, it needs a full rebuild, everything taken apart and put back together. Very very low on compression.

How much should I realistically be selling this for ? I know they are becoming quite scarce these days, dont want to over price it, dont want to under price it.

Cheers.

Good condition running complete engine is worth I reckon $1000-1500 depending on condition (maybe more?)

if it needs a rebuild, be aware that 36hp stuff is hard to come by, so if rings bearings etc are un-obtainable or stupid expensive
then she's not worth heaps to a lot of folks...

there are plenty of people out there sitting on the parts thou - so to someone in that position a 36 might be very attractive...

something about the length of a piece of string...:ninja:

this is of course only one mans opinion...

Don't sell the original engine. The value it ads on resale will be more than you will get for a shagged 36hp now.
The average price I paid for the last 4 non-runner 36hp engines I bought was about $150.
