For me, it was a cold winters night driving along the spit bridge near Mosman- I was driving in my lime green 1500 when another car screamed up next
to me and the occupants begun taking photos of my bug- shouting out praises through grins and thumbs up.
Anyone elae got any favourite moments from they're time with VW's?
An engine install? A workshop memory? A summers day drive? A breakdown even?
Just something memorable that you'll remember forever?
Keen to hear some classic tales!
Cheers,
Ollie
No doubt at all Overtaking a Mini, [while driving my old No 8 Beetle], in 'The Esses' at Bathurst - Touring Car race, 1963.
Cheers, Greg
I was driving my notch down Victoria Road and a guy coming the other way stopped in the middle of the road (almost causing an accident) beeping at me and waving. It felt nice.
I had a 60 beetle I used to decorate up at christmas time. My wife and I were coming back from an event down the gold coast and this brand new seven
series sedan with the husband and wife done up to the nines cruises on past. The wife then gives the husband the big elbow and tells him to slow down.
they drift back to us and she pulls out her top of the range mobile phone and takes some snaps of the car with a big smile on her face and her
husbands, they wave to us ,then hit the go button and go back to bahn storming speed. I laughed and told the wife that their car cost more than our
house and THEY slowed down to look at our old Dub.
Doing 90Mph in a stock 73 Square engine was like doing like 5K RPM
I've got two - Driving the Kangy Angy bends at 8am en route to the central coast show and shine. No one around, the fresh sunlight glinting through
the trees, no sound other than the glorious sound of the 1300!
And last saturday, my birthday actually, I was getting ready to go on a drive to Patonga and I was going out to breakfast with my Fiancee. We stopped
for petrol and discovered the brake fluid reservoir had snapped and I had lost my brakes. Limped it round the corner to VW performance and Leon helped
me sort out the car. It's like the car's present to me was spending 2 hours working on a VW in a VW workshop. Then the rest of the weekend was
awesome - The drive to Patonga and a Kombi Cruise to Terrigal on sunday. Just awesome!
although i love my V8's, best moment in my VW was when i was coming back from the VW nationals 2 yrs ago, pulled up at the lights and a guy and his
young son pulled up beside me in a brand new VE SS... i could tell he was making fun of my bug to his son, so i gave it the beans and left him for
dead hahaha.... then again and again for another 4 sets of lights till he gave up.... hahaha it was a brilliant moment(s)
Many years ago, a mate of mine who had a mini came around home to show me how he had protected his dizzy and electrics from the constant wet weather
we had been having - he reckoned it was pretty good.
I suggested we do a loop around a sand track at the back of the racecourse at the end of our street (pretty swampy) - most of it was covered in water,
averaging probably 100mm deep, but bog holes were deeper.
We set off in the mini and it struggled through - struggling like a short legged dog in deep snow. A few times he had to stop on high patches and keep
the revs up to get it firing on all cylinders again.
We got back home, and I took him around the same track in my '69 bug - barely spun a wheel, never missed a beat, just cruised on through listening to
the sterio.
He left with a rather deflated look. Was priceless.
I just love stories like that, Jeff.....You know, the ones where the Mini come off '2nd best' to a VW!
I have one of those almost everytime I drive past a bunch of kids punch bugging each other.
Although I did have a moment like Polak a few weeks ago at Surfers Paradise coming back from dubs by the pub.
Some P-plater in a riced up new VRX Lancer after 3 sets of lights not getting away asked wtf have i got in that thing??
Think he actually believed me when i said just a worked 1600 VW
knobhead ricers.
In the mid 90's I used to live on the Sunshine Coast north of Brisbane, did many trips surfing up to Double Island Point in my Baja. Anyone who has
been up there would know to drive from the Noosa side of Double Island to the Tin Can Bay side you have to drive over a sand track which can be
tricky.
Often people would line up and watch as you often needed a bit of a run up over the soft sand, remember seeing Jeep Cherokees, Land Cruisers and
various other beasts struggling.
They always bagged the Buggies and Bajas but guess who always made it over no worries! Always fun blowing off those gas guzzlers
in my humble Volkswagon!
A lifetime ago my first VW was a '62 Bug. It was a true Cal looker - no chrome, wide steelies, lowered frontend, no bumbers, blah, blah. Very few
people had one in those days. It was painted blue and everyone called it The Blue Max.
This was in Canberra and they had weird rego laws then. Anyway, long story short, the boys in blue stopped me on the way to work one day. I didn't
know what they were on about, as I wasn't speeding and I wasn't doing anything stupid - I thought it must have been a random breathe test or
something like that. It transpired that they wanted to book me for no front number plate. I sat back and waited for him to write out his ticket then
informed him that the rego rules stated that you had to have two number plates, and the rear one had to be visible at all times. So he said "Hah, got
ya. You don't have a front plate", to which I asked him to kneel down and look under the front. There I had attached the plate to the bottom of the
spare wheel well. He ripped up the ticket, called me something unprintable, hopped back into his car and peeled off in a huff.
Actually, I think I was very lucky - I'm sure he could've kept me there for ages and found heaps to book me with. Needless to say I changed my route
to work from then on.
Old Timer
Driving my '62 with 2 other '70 beetles at my brothers wedding !
A couple of years ago on my way home from a concert, I pulled up a set of lights, looked over to my left and saw an Asian guy in a Nissan 200sx
looking back and revving his motor, so I thought why not, lights changed we were neck and neck till I put it in third and he started to nudge ahead,
by this stage we were way over the 60k limit. Pulled up at the next set of lights, he rolled down his window and gave me a big smile and thumbs up.
That was cool, how many guys would be happy that their modern turbo almost got beaten by a 30 year old bug.
Feeling 18lb boost and seemingly endless power and accelleration,,,
First launch of the rat I took to portland last month. After 10 years rotting in the weather it took off shaking so hard I couldn't see straight.
The glovebox flies open and *hit flies all over the cab. Kaked meself laughing all the way down the strip. Yeah, that was a good day!
Too many anytime i drive my beetle is a pleasure but one memorable time was when a HSV clubsport drove past but the kids in the car could only look at
my rosie and waved.
reading some of these stories is what makes me want to increase the power in my standard 1600 twinport just to blow off a few dudes now and then
cruising thru cardiff in newcastle, came up to the set of traffic lights at cardiff toyota, had a honda civic vti pull up laughing at my early squareback. Lights turned green and it took him about 5klm to catch up to me , next set of traffic lights i hung out the window and told him maybe he should sell his burner and buy a classic.(got to love stan pobjoy engines) 1916,s are the best thing out there.
Running 12.3@106mph at wsid in jan this year
My all time favorite moment was cruising in my brothers slammed 59 bug from Brisbane to Melbourne with my brother and pub mate Leroy, thE hole trip
went fantastic but cruisin over Sydney habour bridge at midnight with the sound of the worked 40hp was what dreams are mad of 8)
Next favorite moment was when I first got into dubs and jase from bendigo took us on a local tour in his 54, that's what got me hooked
And last but not least is 2 weeks ago I got pulled over by the local police, three of them came to look over the car and even tho there defect book
wouldn't fit under the car (he reckons it was 95mm) he still let me off with a warning and a "I love what you've done to this thing, do the
semaphores still work?" that was cool to no some else appreciated what it's all about
This is my fav, listen to the announcer!!

Would probably have to be when my stock 1300 swingaxle Baja dug itself out of a mud hole while offroading in Gladstone at the end of last year.

For me, about 15 years ago I was sitting in a servo cafe at Buladellah when all of a sudden a long parade of VW's were heading North. This being 12
years prior to me owning a VW and I still remember it and was great seeing them all go past, one after another.
And I still mention this to people today.
Kev
I have many this is one of the best moments knocking a V8 out of the eliminations with a win heaps of fun.

Great run, Rose!
In my first 76 with flares, fats etc, I was on Pennant Hills road waiting to turn. Cop car pulls up next to me and my car promptly run out of fuel. I
had to get out an push it around the cop car into the servo on the other side of the road. Lucky it was late at night and the sevo was so close...an
not uphill.
Should have seen the confused look on the cops faces.....and my embarassed face.
