most vw shops have second hand spares. although some items just arent worth getting second hand.
what are you after, post a list and you may get offered the parts.

Sadly things have changed since the '70s and '80s, when there were quite a few VW-only wreckers about. It was great to go there with a couple of spanners and screwdrivers, and be allowed to wander up and down the rows and unbolt whatever you needed. Or wander through their storage rooms and rummage through the dozens of bins of VW parts.

But nowadays air-cooled VWs are not everyday 'mainstream' vehicles, they are specialist 'classic' cars, just like early Chevys, MGs, Mustangs and Morris Minors. There just aren't enough of them left on the roads now to keep the old VW wreckers in business. The old ones have either closed down or have given over to other makes. All Model Auto Wreckers at Revesby, for example, still have their VW parts sign up but don't have any VWs there now. They are 4WD only. Bug Parts at Punchbowl closed down; so did Beetle Wreckers at Brookvale. You could try 'Brookvale Spares' at Smithfield (02) 8788 5003 as they still list 'VW' in the Yellow pages, but I doubt they'd have any pre-67 Beetles sitting there. Those days are gone, sadly.

Today wreckers like to call themselves 'Auto Parts Recyclers' - you aren't allowed to wander free out the back and unbolt your own parts. I discovered this new world order when I needed some second-hand parts for my Golf; I firstly had to find a 'European' auto wreckers that had wrecked Golfs, and then they damaged the window regulator part I wanted getting it out.

I am hoping that, with the increasing sales of new VWs, there may soon be a business case for NEW VW-only wrecking yards for Golfs, Polos, etc. They could then extend to parts for earlier ones.

Come to the VW Nationals swapmeet at Fairfield Showgrounds on Sunday 22nd May; you can probably find what you need.

There is also Pick'n'Payless at Blacktown. I got some bits of a few VW's they had down the back that ranged from '63 to '74 models. Take your tool kit and pull off what you need.

Be prepared to pay some serious money for your efforts though.

You could always road trip to Canberra. There is The beetle Exchange in Fyshwick http://www.beetleexchange.com.au/

and also Volks Parts Australia http://www.volkspartsaustralia.com/index.html

I have never bought from Volks Parts, but it looks like they have a heap of second hand gear.

If you felt like a run up the central coast there is also VW Performance, which has a fair bit of stuff on hand.
