Heard about this recently, but didn't quite catch the time, is it true that his
F1 car did a circuit of Mt Panorama, 15 seconds faster than the V8s?

No one ever listens, thats what happens when you rear mount your engine!

benjicon - March 31st, 2011 at 02:15 PM

HAHA.. yeah 1:48 in the Mclaren .... 2:06 by Lowdens last year in a V8 .. Official record.

waltermitty - March 31st, 2011 at 03:26 PM

Craig Lownes had a lap of the F1 Also and managed a 1:49 , 1 second slower than Button. Not bad I recon. M

Yeah. The most impressive thing for me was how similar each drivers lap time was just out of the box.
It's no surprise that the F1 was quicker than the V8, I read that Button thinks there's another 8 seconds in it with some tweaking.

DubbyFan - March 31st, 2011 at 06:10 PM

Wow Lownes 1 second slower is pretty impressive, yes he knows the track but wouldn't think he would now the car that well, just
goes to show show talented these guys are!

Yeah, doing this sort of stuff is excellent for both sports I reckon... for increasing the F1 fanbase here in Aus AND for getting some more international exposure for the V8 Supercars. I travel a bit for work, and most overseas motorsport nuts I meet are amazed when I describe Mt Panorama to them.

Re Lowndes, well he's one VERY talented driver... possibly the best in the current crop of V8 drivers, and he very nearly managed to make it big into the European open-wheeler scene many moons ago. Basically he and Webber went over seas at the same time, and Webber just had the better luck.

But yeah - awesome drive from both of 'em !!!

:D

that was great!!!
2 great drivers, and 2 top cars.
One of the best things to come from Bathurst and further cements it into the international motorsport scene.
I'm glad that this was arranged, but disappointed that I didn't get to see if first hand :(
Hope they do it again next year.

Cheers

So what times did they set in the V8 supercar? I know they were close in the F1 but was it close in the commodore as well?
