Tow bar and roof racks
stilson - April 12th, 2011 at 10:40 AM
Hi guys.
I want to put a lightweight roof rack and tow bar on my 70 1500 but can only find them for new beetle. I think I may have to fabricate them myself but
I have a tendancy to over engineer things 3mm mild steel finds it's way in to every thing.
Is there a universal rack that works well on our gutters?
The bug sees some dune work so clearance will be a factor for the tow bar.
Cheers

You can find roof bars /racks that fit our old beetles now & then on ebay....
years ago, all cars had gutters like beetles...
It seems You haven't seen a VW tow bar....
there should be hundreds of those about behind sheds etc..
many people [Me] used beetle tow bars to stop damage from anyone running into the back of Your beetle...
they clamp around the rear torsion bars....
Round steel pipe about 2 inches OD approx..
and go back to the rear bumper brackets that bolt to the rear bumper bar...
a steel bar then goes across behind the bumper....
so... they ALL hit things...
as they are the LOWEST part of the beetle...

PS: I don't think anyone would make the tow bars as there are still lots of them about.... well used... Lee
