I bought a Tri-Mil exhaust on the weekend and its ceramic coated all round including the tail pipes.
Is it possible to polish off the ceramic coating to get a high shine stainless steel effect?
Will it be expensive?
Why would you want to? If it's ceramic coated then I doubt that it would be any decent grade of stainless as well. Most probably mild steel. Keep the ceramic coat and it will prevent rust. Ceramic coating of exhausts costs more than stainless anyway.
I want shiny tips to match my bumper.
Does this mean i should weld new tips on?
Iv'e just had my full system ceramic coated so ill tell you what iv'e learnt. The ceramic coaters I used bead blast or acid dip the system
to prep it, so maybe this would stuff the original steel ,if it was stainless, for polishing. You can polish up ceramic coated parts with metal polish
(eg. Autosol) . Degreaser should not come into contact with ceramic coating as it will discolour it to milky dull look. The coaters polish the exhaust
as part of the process so maybe you could send it to one of those guys to get a higher polish look. It cost me 300 bucks for a full VW system of any
type from any condition to bling. I had my system coated mainly because it keeps the heat in the exhaust and away from my aircooled motor.
who could do this in Sydney?
perhaps westi may know someone through his shop?
I have done just as you want on All kinds of exhausts.an example is a pr of Chinese stainless cannons, ceramic on the pipes and the tips left polished stainless. In theory it sounds good but the pre bake and baking to cure the ceramic will blue the polished stainless or chrome tip,it onlygets worse with time on the car.if you really want chrome tips wait til you Mexican/Chinese coating goes to shit sort out some bolt on chrome/stainless tips.get your exhaust modified to suit and get your exhaust re coated(hi octane in syd) Oh yes you can polish /sand the coating off if you want.
Yeah i would get some custom tips tacked in place to suit your cosmetics.
Bolt on!If you weld on to ceramic coating you have to grind it which starts the rusting. And you get ceramic coating to stop rust!So think about how you want your parts to look and do it once!I re do somuch stuff cause people don't think it thru before coating.
coletrickle are you in Sydney?
Fair enough maybe but if he is going to start polishing(grinding) a ceramic coating off... what would be the result? I think he is looking for a
cosmetic finish not a rust free solution. If that was the case he should leave the ceramic coating on.
Tips might allow him to hide the section that has been welded and yes there would be resultant rust...
