I have this serial stamped on my oval just under the compliance plate in the front, does anyone know what it means?

Cheers

Two possibilities I can think of.

Firstly, it could be a paint colour code. Australian VWs were painted in Dulux colours, but that number doesn't match any original Dulux number code (which, for ovals, were 4-digit numbers starting with 7) - see http://www.clubvw.org.au/colour_identification.htm

If not, it could be a CKD kit numbering stamp or ID-code, as your car would have been assembled in Melbourne from a German CKD kit. 12 crates of parts provided enough parts for 8 cars. That might be a batch number of some sort, but I haven't seen one like it before.

I was hoping you'd read this post Jimby, I couldn't find your post about your two ovals!....

Do you know what the code represents?

I dont know which month mine is, but i know its around mid 55- before the 1056 changes were inplemented in 1955... I'm confusing myself now.... do you know of a table of serial numbers from which i can find out the month manufacture?

Cheers
