I live in Perth and am thinking of buying a car in Vic to take to Tassie to drive there while I am on 3mths holiday ,any idea of the legallaties of this, any hints on insurance .
If you are the legal owner of an Australian legaly registered vehicle I would think you can drive it anywhere you wish in Australia, I have never even thought to check with my insurance company about where I drive it, why would they care (except if you were competing in some type of motor sport or off road driving).
Well, it would all depend on how the rego is transferred when you buy the car. There is absolutely nothing wrong with driving a Victorian-registered
car in Tasmania, or any other state of Australia. The problem would be whether you can register your car in a state which you do not live in. When you
buy the car and have the rego put into your name, you need to give an address. The only question which you need to answer is this: If the address
which you give is in WA, can you transfer the remaining Victorian rego to your name? I would think that it should be okay, but double check with the
VicRoads.
If you are not allowed to transfer Victorian rego to your Perth address, then the car would need to be taken back to WA for a roadworthy inspection
and then registered in WA before you can go travelling to Tasmania.
Thats exactly the problem I have [ you put it better than me ] I will call Vicroads and enquire , If I can find a car with 12mth rego that would be easier , It will be to costly to bring a car to Wa then truck it back to Tassis .
I think there is a period of grace to change over so it might be long enough to get your holiday in
This is straight off the WA registration website......
"When purchasing a licensed vehicle you must complete the vehicle licence transfer form with the seller and submit the 'purchaser's copy' within
14 days of purchasing the vehicle. Failing to do so may result in a penalty. Failure to pay the vehicle licence duty and transfer fee within 28 days
of the invoice being issued will result in an infringement."
