well i havent been a member here long but i think we have found the perfect LWB Beach buggy, its a little higher in price then we wanted but looks perfect, ground up rebuild beach buggy kit that it sounds like he did well.

will post pics once we get it, i have always been a turbo high performance sort of guy so this is something different for me.

Going for a road trip tomorrow from Leeton to Melbourne to pick it up should have it home again Saturday.



we want it so it can be towed behind our 73' 11ft Bedford motorhome we are building. will give us something to go on beaches and to the shops etc when stopped somewhere.

wont post pics till its done and purchased and we are back home again just in case something changes.

Okay i decided because i have to drive so far to see this it might have been worth posting a few more details to see if anyone knew anything good or bad about this guy and his car.

it was listed on ebay a month ago and no one bid on it but that seems to be how all of them go at the moment, doesnt seem to be anyone with money for toys at all.









if anyone has any good or bad things to say about this before i drive 600km's to go get it please speak now :-)

it looks to be built well full rebuild from floor pan up etc he said there is a leak at the sump plate and from what i understand one at the gearbox near the drive shaft as well its a swing bar gearbox design ? torsion rear suspension i think i dont this is all so new to me.

Is this being sold with a road worthy (or equivalent).

I note there is no rear engine cage or full width front and rear bumpers? This may cause you issues if you need to get it registered or by over zealous police officers.

he is getting a roadworthy done on it for me but he said its being done by a friend and that because of the leaks in the sump plate and cv it wouldnt normally pass but appart from that he said its legal.

its Vic rego, and we will keep it in vic rego (registered at my father in laws address)

whats the story with cage around motor ? and front and rear bumpers ? ive seen allot of bugs without them is it needed ?

we are wanting to put them on eventually anyway but thought it would be okay the way it is for now, maybe not if its illegal :-(

Not telling you not to buy it, but this is my 2 cents.

Always need to be careful of "mates roadworthies" they may also overlook other issues which may make the vehicle dodgy or cost you more than you think. Surprised he found someone willing to do one for a sale. I could understand if he was keeping it, but that is a big risk of a fine.

Also you can't assume what other people do is always correct either. Passenger Vehicles in Australia must have front and rear bumpers to the full width of the vehicle to minimise injury if you are in an accident. The Engine must be enclosed to prevent injury from prying fingers. In this case your exhaust is very exposed.

You also don't have mudguards on the rear (which does make buggies look crap) but are a legal requirment.

If you were going to sort this stuff out anyway or don't care - then it may not be an issue for you. Just thought it pays to go in with your eyes open.

I guess it all depends on how much you are paying for it. There is no such thing as a finished buggy so if you are happy to work on it and fix any issues that come up then go for it. You may also need to be careful having a "car" registered in one state and it always being in another state, especially if you live in a small community.
In the end you are looking for good value for money.

hmmmm okay we drove down 600 km's with the trailer to have a look on the way i started to think it wasn't a good idea.

i got there and i'm 6'3" and i couldn't see out the window, maybe this is normal for someone my hight but i couldn't see past the roll bar it was right in my line of view and that was annoying.

anyway even after driving all that way with trailer in tow something just didnt feel right and we really should be spending the money on finishing our motorhome, once its done we will look again and see what we can find.

Yep, being 6'3" will make it a challenge fitting in any buggy. You would need to find very low seats (like MX5 ones) and have them sitting on the floor. I am only just over 6' and dont easily fit into most buggies. You would be very lucky to buy a buggy that is already setup to fit you. It certainly can be done, you will just have to make changes :-). Hope you have better luck next time you start looking.

How much did he want for it?

yeah had it on ebay again starting at $10,000 and it got passed in no bids, the funny thing was i offered $10,000 when i was there, said i would give him the cash on the spot and he said it was too low, so we jumped back in the car and drove back home :-(

i sort of wonder now if he regrets not taking it.

To the NSW or VIC people how hard is it to get a unit registered if its currently unregistered ?

is there anything that has to be done or things to watch out for ?

was thinking about getting one that is currently unregistered but i dont want too much hassle getting it back on the road, i dont mind making sure its road worthy with tyres, suspension, roll cage and front and rear bar work etc but what else do they really pick on or is it fairly easy if a car runs and looks okay ?

It all depends on a few things. If it is a long wheel base buggy (hasn't been shortened) then it is possible to get it engineered and registered. If it is shortened and does not have previous rego papers then it becomes almost impossible.
If you have one in mind then put up as much info as you can on it, and some pics if you can and people on here will be able to give you advice on how easy/hard it would be to get registered.

p.s. good thing you didn't buy it. That roll bar is a disaster. Should be one single hoop, not welded right angle corners.
