I'm currently on the magical quest of finding a keyed to like set of door handles. I've found a set on the internet, but shipping from the states is
huge!
And then I thought to myself, the ignition barrel will need to be replaced too with a keyed to like lock, the same as the door handles. So yes, I
think I am dreaming to find these online.
So, do I put a WTB up in the Buying, Selling and Swapping parts section or do I continue to hunt for something that will no doubt not come?
I wonder if anyone on here has everything keyed to like, I doubt anyone still has the original door handles, ignition barrel and keys to match...
I sold a set a few months ago with ignition, doors, engine lid and original VW key for $100, so they are out there
Alternatively a good locksmith should be able to re-key your existing ones to work off the same key. You just need to find a set with the same prefix
keycode
Just specify the year of your car in the wanted ad.
Cheers
Steve
It would probably surprise you how many still have all original locks and handles.
Nearly all of mine have, even my Lbug with over half a million KMs on it now had both original door handles and original Ignition barrel. not only
that even factory keys with the code stamped on them.
Decklid latch was a dealer fitted one though so key didnt match.
Its mainly ignition barrels the get worn out from people having huge bunches of keys swinging off them or door handles that break and people dont
realise how easy it is to swap the barrel.
If you can get the code to your key (on the side of the barrel when you remove it) any good lock smith can rekey the door barrels to match.
I used to do alittle bit of it but my tumbler wafer collection is running bit low.
I'll check, think I have a set depending on your model. Buy Swap and Sell is the best place though.
Just put the year in the WTB topic.
I'll see if I can do that with the locksmith however, I'll have to find a good one locally.
Unless someone does have a complete set that I can just rip out my old ones and put the new set on.
Would be a good little job anyway, replacing all the bits.
My decklid is also a different key, might add that to the WTB topic.

we got two new door handles and keys $100 plus $16 USA post
Our Beetle had all original keys and barrels all around, including original key with code number.
I had to replace ign barrel due to wear, and a locksmith cut a new new key from the code number, and made the ign barrel with new wafers.
He said as long as you cut any replacement keys from the new new key that is cut from the code number, then you are not playing chinese whispers with
your key cutting.
We all know what someone heard from someone from someone who heard from someone that heard from someone that knew someone that heard from someone. Key
cutting is the same. You cut down the line a few times, and the edges round off a lot.
The locksmith is the man to see.

any locksmith worthy of the gig can key em alike
I've done this to several cars over the years
not really that difficult

Just remove all your locks and ignition and take them to a decent locksmith, he will key them all alike.
It's as easy as that.
Might be best to call round some locksmiths and ask first as there are locksmiths and there are locksmiths.
being a locksmith ...its not hard to rekey them you can buy wafer kits but are not that good a quality, i always try n use good cond og ones ,

Alright, I'm really keen at giving it a shot myself, to the decklid anyway. I'm going to pick up some already keyed to like door handles, and then
give it a shot to key the ignition barrel and decklid myself!
I bought this > http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150622010223&ss...
and it arrived today. I stripped it of the wafers and ended up using all but one. but since the ignition barrel have one extra wafer I am still in
need of 2.
One really as I had a good used one from another door barrel but
none of the last type I need.
So now I have the whole thing soaking in prep wash as the gunk is so bad the springs are jammed in there and some of the wafers just jam up.
Slowly getting there
Also order nos huf keys to code.
Vlad,
I'm thinking I'm going to give a couple of the local locksmiths some phone calls and see what they say about rekeying the decklid and passenger door
handle.
That is all, as my drivers door and ignition already match, there isn't really much of a point of buying new handles and so forth.
i had the problem of only having the ignition key so i pulled all the barrels out of my van than fitting the keys lugs that didn't go down when the key was inserted an hour later I had a full set of locks using the one key and only that unlocked the barrels
