GT driver killed at Phillip Island
A race car driver has been killed while competing in the pro-car series http://www.procar.com.au at Phillip Island in Victoria this afternoon.
Stewart McColl, 23 of Newcastle, died when his Volkswagon Golf slammed into a tyre wall during qualifying.
McColl was driving in the qualifying round of the Australian GT Performance Championship.
Prior to this season, McColl had been racing open-wheelers in Formula Ford and Formula Holden, now known as Formula 4000.
Sydney-based McColl was the lead driver for the Volkswagon Factory team.
The president of the Confederation of Australian Motorsport, Colin Osborne, says McColl was an up and coming driver
"He was very, very well thought of amongst the motorsport fraternity and he had a good career in Formula Ford," he said. "Those people
who knew of him were quite confident about his future."
Police and the coroner are investigating the accident.
McColl was fourth in the 2000 Australian Formula Ford Championship and took the most race wins of the season, before taking multiple race wins in
Formula Holden in 2002 for the Ralt Australia team.

R.I.P. Stewart.
I too have lost some one today, a good mate who helped me many a time whilst working on a car(vw).
He will be sadly missed.
R.I.P. Olliver (ollie)

Oh no.. Thats awful. Nothing worse than someone with talent having their life cut short..
It truly is a sad day. I was only looking at the new R32 and talking to the team at Qld raceway a few weeks ago. I'm pretty sure this was also
the round where the second Golf was to be begin racing.
Thoughts go out to family and friends.
Sorry to hear about Ollie dude, has'nt been your week has it Ads
*enter homie-esque hugs here*
That's the one kafer, the first time the two cars were out and they alreaddy had #1 and #2 on the grid... Such a tragedy (
It always a sad when some one dies but so young makes it very sad
