So I've been looking for a van, well I need one as I've got two dogs, two grandkids, a lady an all so it's just too damned hard getting em in the wench. I've looked at a few busses, the last one looks good but I was steering towards a caddy, only two seats but the ability to install additional seats for the tin lids, found one (lots of em actualy) on evilbay so did a throw away bid knowing it's too low to get it, bugger, I now own an unregistered 1.9 diesel in Adelaide, a long long way from home. Looks like I'll have to figure out a way to get down there, get it regoed for NSW and then drive it home, or maybe get it transported into NSW and register it here. Learning curve coming up.

Just drive it home if its got SA rego, then sort out transferring it

carcarrying.com.au was able to get my toyota shipped to adelaide for $550, door to door. I imagine Newcastle would be half that.

Look into an temporary permit. Rta does them, not sure about sa

Wow mate, you're brave buying that one from interstate! I was watching that on eBay myself, but I don't need a van so I decided to let it go. Is there a reason that it was unregistered or was it just out of rego? If you need help getting it sorted out, I'd be happy to come along for the adventure!

Just random help if needed. Help with any SA rego issues (but I don't work for them), could probably stick it outside my house if you needed somewhere to leave it. Might even help pick it up if its not too far away from me

Unreg

Unregistered in Adelaide. pay the $183 reg for three months and the 20 or so bucks transfer and drive home. Is it drivable?

Driveable and never been in an accident but on the writen off list, after extensive enquiries I have found no way around getting it passed and reregistered in SA then bringing to NSW and changing to NSW registration, sounds bloody stupid for a car that has no damage and never has had but the authorities have built a big stone wall that's impossible to get over. I have sorted out what I need to do and how to do it, but it will take a little longer than I thought originaly.

Can I ask "why" it is on the written off list then??

Economical write off, water damage to back end of the interior from a high pressure hose that blew a connection on a unit in the back of the van (least ways that's what I have been told) I have had it confirmed that there is no pannel damage, no electricals have been damaged and the air bags have not been set off, no money changed hands yet so hopefully all will check out, but why it ends up on a register is beyond me, seems that the same thing happens here in New South.

The most likely scenario is that there has been an insurance claim/payout on the vehicle and the insurance company have registered it as a write off.
Without knowing the exact details, I would guess the insured owner and the insurance company may have had a disagreement and things have turned out sour.

It might not be sour with the insurance, I thought some companies let you keep the written off car (or buy it back) so he may be just be looking to make extra coin off the wreck.

Dave, do you know how easy/hard it is to get a written off car inspected in SA? I know regular unregistered cars are a walk in job, would it just take a trip over the pits at Regency?

Jesus... he's got about 16 currently running on Ebay! Looks like he's buying them from the auction houses down here and trying to flip them for a profit.

Do you get an inspection report that tells you actually what kind of water damage there was? Just thinking that if you have to repair the car first, and it was a garden hose... all you'd have to do is de-mold the car and wd40 the electrics?? Doesn't sound hard, so either easy for you or something lurking that needs to be fixed

It depends on why? If the rego has been cancelled (refunded) then the vehicle may simply need an ID inspection. If thats the case then make sure the car is roadworthy and stock standard (wheels, ride height) before you make a booking for inspection. If you drive in with obvious defects, or the inspector is having a bad day, doesn't like your attitude then he can do what he dam well likes and if it means stuffing up your day then so be it.
The only cars that can not be re registered as far as I am aware of are accident write offs, modifications without compliance, defectable or stolen vehicles.
It often helps if you have mechanical or engineering qualifications to back up your argument, but a well excecuted plan (experience) will beat the system in most cases.
Remember one thing... If somebody tells you they are from the government, and are here to "help you", be afraid, very afraid!

Ha ha ha! Yeah, its even better when you're trying to find out info from them and each person you speak to has a different take on the rules.
I had a engine conversion in a HJ ute go through regency, the guy I had doing the inspection loved his old holdens and coupled with a friendly attitude from me he let a few borderline calls slip through to the keeper.

I think that a writeoff of any reason would attract a strict looking at by them, as they have a reason to reject you. (sorry Donn, not trying to hijack you here )

Inspection of Written-Off Vehicles
Commencing 31 July 2011 AUVIS will no longer provide
Written-Off Vehicle (WOV) clearance inspections in any area
of NSW
Commencing 31 July 2011
• AUVIS will no longer be required to carry out WOV checks .
• Any customer requesting a WOV check should be advised that the RTA now conducts this
check and to contact the RTA for advice on 13 22 13.
• AUVIS using AIS online will be alerted by an online message that the vehicle has been writtenoff.
This message will not stop the system from accepting the inspection.
• AUVIS should refer customers to the RTA website http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/wov  for further
information.
Note: The on-screen message will be highlighted in blue and appear similar to "This vehicle has
been "written-off" check with customer to proceed." The normal inspection may then proceed
under the customer’s instruction. The customer should be informed of the changes to WOV legislation
and:
• if inside the VIIU area, attend a motor registry to book in for a RTA inspection to obtain written
off vehicle clearance.
• If outside the VIIU area, visit the RTA web site or contact the RTA for advice on 13 22 13
