New forum software coming

Hi folks,

I am working on porting our forum to a modern forum software. As some of you know, I helped write this forum, but I don't have the time I once did, so it's time to move things on to a more supportable basis.

I am working on getting the data out of this one, and that's the real showstopper. If I can't get that done by January 9, it will not happen for at least another 12 months.

The other changes include:

  • Features that the new software doesn't have, I am disabling now, like the RPG mod
  • There will be a member clean up soon. There are around 4000 folks who have registered but never posted. The first phase is to remove all accounts that have never logged in, and then the next phase is to remove all accounts that have logged in, but never posted. I will post more closer to the time.
  • There will be a data clean up job done soon. The data in this forum is dirty in that it contains a lot of additional apostrophes that you don't see, but could muck up a migration. This will be fixed over time, and should be transparent to you.
  • Additionally, I am moving graphical assets around and consolidating them. Where possible I will make the changes required in your profiles so you don't see this change at all. Unfortunately, there's quite a lot of user files that are intermingled with the forum's files, and this has to be fixed before we move to the new forum software.

    If there are any other things that need to happen before the big day, I will let you know. I will be putting the forum up in user acceptance test as soon as I've got something that is worth showing you folks.

    Good luck with the porting across to the new software I know how big an issue that is due to my involvement as an administrator in another site (non vw)
