you could get a later door and fit it as they had the stock hole for the mirror

where abouts are you at

the ones that go in the hinge pin dont really work on the pass side

I have heard that the threaded hole is still there??

Brave call though to drill a hole to see

Make a template from the drivers side, mark it carefully on the passenger door (reverse the template) drill a pilot hole ( check and make sure that you can access the position as you may have to move up or down slightly to fit the nut) and then to size,if you split a nut in half and slide it carefully into place and fit the mirror.I have fitted a few with this method from memory the nut is 16mm which is the same size as the early laser rear hub nuts. Good luck Les

They're not, I've got a few 71 and earlier left doors and they don't have the inserts in there.

72 and later do with a plastic plug fitted.
THe inserts weld in place before the 2 door skins are spot welded together.

You could probably tack one in place with a stick welder with the quarter window out.

But easiest fix would be some aftermarket screw on mirrors or mk1 Golf.
