The Australian Design Rules that manufacturers/importers had to meet came into effect in 1970, so prior to this there was no 'compliance plate'. The
little metal plate fitted near the washer bottle behind the spare tyre was called the Manufacturers Plate. The 1960s ones only had rudimentary details
on them.
Lee only German-built Beetles had 'Made in Western Germany' on them. Australian-sold cars were almost all made in Melbourne, and had 'Volkswagen
Australasia Ltd' on them. Only the very earliest '54 Beetles, and the '68-on semi autos (and the earliest '68 manuals) were fully imported. The
rest were made here.
After 1970, when the Design Rules came in, the Manufacturers Plate then had to specify which of the rules the car met, so it became a 'Compliance
plate'. The number of rules increased significantly over the years!
This is the Manufacturers Plate from my old Aussie '64 (which I kept as a souvenir after it was written off)

Didn't I just say that the old manufacturers plate became a compliance plate when the ADRs came in? Here's an early '70s example - even though the
car was CKD assembled in Melbourne, the plate now says 'This vehicle was manufactured by Volkswagenwerk AG to comply with Australian Design Rules
Nos: 1,2 3...', etc etc. Yes it's now a 'compliance plate' because that what it is specifying; but you could also still call it a 'manufacturers
plate' if you wanted. I'm not talking about the current models - or even the post '77 full imports.
The only reference to the VW M912 code I can find quickly is to do with chromed mudguard beading - please explain?
50 Cabros were imported in 1961 to be sold through Melbourne dealers in June. (Winter time) I wonder why they didn't sell?
