Looking for someone in Adelaide with the tools and skills to tune twin carb setup. (someone with aircooled VW experience)
Any help is really appriciated.

I'm heading down to OG Speed shop. Bloke there is a carb specialist.

Otherwise, there's Auto Carb Specialists down Marion road somewhere.
Good luck, it's a pain in the arse with dual carbs, I've had Zelda running like shit spluttering everywhere because of it.

What dual carbs you using?

Its' a dual carb setup on a friends 912 porsche they run twin solex 40p II carbs. Want someone who know aircooled motors

SebastienPeek - February 12th, 2012 at 10:28 AM

This bloke, his name is Lee I think, but I know he's done aircooled motors before. I've seen lineups of bugs down that street and have also seen many type 3's down there too.

I guess it just depends how far away it is from you?

912's, I haven't seen any in Adelaide. That is fair awesome!

I thought you were taking your car to peter D? What happened?
Thanks for the info Sebastien, I'll give OG's a call.

SebastienPeek - February 12th, 2012 at 10:31 AM

I took it to Peter. He didn't do much to fix the issue, if anything they still run like shit.

No dramas! I thought I might as well share the knowledge that I have due to the crap experience that I'm having. Pouring quite a bit of money into these carbs and I'm sure they aren't worth it at all.
They're probably going to need a complete rebuild, re-jetted and then balanced and synced and all that hoopla.

Almost tempted to go back to single carb.

You're far better off learning to tune them yourself.
Twin carbs are great and well worth it once you get them running right.

I learnt how to do them just from a little bit of reading on the net and some friendly advice on here.

I bought a carb syncing tool from the states but have only used it once, you can get the carbs to run better if you do it by ear.

So stick with it! You get to learn something new plus you get the immense satisfaction for having done the job yourself.

What twin carbies do you have that need tuning? I'm sure there are plenty of people on here that can offer you advice.

I want to tune mine, just have to do a lot of work to get it done.
Might try and see what I can do today, maybe.

Will see what happens.

carb balancer is a must also when was the last time all manifold gaskets were replaced and mayaswell rebuild them check floats replace all lines nothing worse than shit runnung dual carbs , have two busses with dual carbs very rarely have to touch them as cars have been dynoed and carbs completely rebuilt

If you want to tune them yourself an air fuel meter is very useful in getting the jetting right. There are a few around. Here is one:

Dude just do it your self at most a bit of info off the net a couple of books from swap meets and a screw driver thats about it,and if your paying money and it dosen't run any better what are you paying for?If your serious ring Matt Berry he has offered to talk you through setting up your carbs linkage and associated bits.A couple of phone calls how much could that cost.Best of luck.

A homemade manometer made with timber, clear tubing and transmission fluid gets them synced up.

matberry - February 16th, 2012 at 08:20 PM

Thanks Col, it's easy, you have to use the fact that when each cylinder responds a similar amount if you kill the ignition or as you adjust the mixture screws things are getting close. Linkages are set after the carbs are all balanced and mixtures set. It's a step by step process, that as you get used to the way it should sound, and how it responds to adjustments you'll get the feel for it. Spark and ignition and also valve adjustments should be set and in good condition FIRST. Very important to have these basic mechanical settings correct before the carb adjustments.
