NOT CHEAP

the chrome quality on new rims isnt very good and will proberly rust within a few days

what wheels do you have ???

coletrickle - February 15th, 2012 at 09:03 AM

You can have them coated in ceramic like the exhausts. Not quite chrome but pretty good. But if you have any pitting from rust you will see this in the finished item as the coating is only 5thou thick and straight over bare metal. But have a look into it might be what your looking for but not cheap.

yeah micks motors is about an hour from me but i think i may have work up that way next week and they are 15x7 on the rear and i think 15x6
heres some pics if that would help you vw 54

vw54 - February 15th, 2012 at 05:43 PM

Ok so they are basicly stock widened wheels

Still have to be cut apart and re welded together

I would estimate at least $300 to $400 each rim

as i said before new ones will proably rust as you take them out of the box

The only problem is its not very robust, a friend had his Fuchs done and the tyre fitting goo made it flake off

jamiesc - February 15th, 2012 at 06:57 PM

so around the 1200 mark kewl has anybody got pics at all ?

matberry - February 15th, 2012 at 08:24 PM

Steve, Col's here and say's that is just bad coating. Properly done ceramic coating will take a lot more than that, sounds like bad prep. He's done plenty and speaks from experience.

Aussie Dubbin - February 16th, 2012 at 05:52 PM

find a good quality chromer before you worry about any thing else then realize that welding them back together starts the rusting process in the flange between center and rim and usually does not get covered properly. For the dough and the hassle if you cant find a good set already chromer be cautios of what you'd $thousand bucks will get you. You can get a set of chromed mags for less

jamiesc - February 16th, 2012 at 06:05 PM

yeah that what i thought also aussie dubbin i also thing of just getting the hubs drilled out and putting some nice rims on

cesiumfrog - February 16th, 2012 at 06:22 PM

yeah..forget chrome. cost me an arm and a leg through a quality plater in sydney,
wash and wax all the time to try keep them new looking new, 5 years later strips peeling off.
having said that, sent bumpers to a place in melbourne and they are unmarked years later,
good as original, beautiful job.

jamiesc - February 16th, 2012 at 06:53 PM

how much does it usually cost you for your bumpers to be chromed roughly cesiumfrog ?

Hi Matt & Col

He had them done buy one of the top guys in Sydney, that's why his wheels are grey now. He was told by the coater to never rub the finish, he washed the tyre goo off.

Hi steve not to blow my own horn but I used to work at competition coatings in Qld.I've coated stuff from all over australia and re coated other stuff from other states. If we were doing a re do on someone elses coating i could tell it wasn't done at competition coatings qld,the sandblaster dosent lie, other coaters, some even using the same product, but not doing the same prep proceedure, we found the coating just dosen't key into the base metal as well and can flake off on some areas.I've coated the stuff for triple 8,SBR,Gary Phillips,Bill Barry Cotter etc all champs in their feild and they were all paying customers. And as for rubbing the coating every peice ishand polished as a last step with a non abrasive metal polish (california gold,Mothers). I stand by my first comment, it is all down to prep.

Hi Col

It must work if you get those results, my friend is very disappointed, maybe you can talk to him at the drags. If its as good as your saying then it really is viable alternative to chrome.

I'm not doubting you, the times that I've met you you seem to be a straight up guy.
