Empi drop spindles?
smithy68 - April 7th, 2012 at 09:00 AM

Just wanted to know if the Empi drop spindles are any good/or would people use them?
They are for link pin front end using standard drum brakes.

Why would you use them when there are other quality brands out there?
They dont have a good reputation and dropped spindles are subject to flex and are an intergral part of suspension / steering

Do a search and find Golde60's build post and look at all the trouble he went through to get his engineered.
I doubt the others would pass

I wouldnt care how cheap they are

I've heard the cast spindles like EMPI provide toe out on acceleration and toe in on braking....

I think there is another thread in the circuit racing section where spindles are discussed; but any FORGED spindle should be ok

Personally I wouldn't trust EMPI for something that holds my front wheels and brakes on :smirk:

Cheers

So has anyone snapped or bent an empi themselves ,under their driving conditions .(what was the experience)
corner speed ,jumping,braking etc
drum or disc?

http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=94382

some talk in this thread regarding drop spindles.

But I've read more on the US forums like the samba regarding acutal experiences with EMPI

From all I've read the spindles offered by Airkewld are the best

I have just gone through this myself. Bought cb spindles then sold them to buy a set of airkewld spindles. When they are talking forged most companies have a forged spindle pressed into a cast body. airkewld are forged bodies as well as spindles. I have heard from a few circuit racing guys that the cast bodies flex under heavy cornering. I am sure that CB's spindles are strong as I remember the tests in Goldie's posts. Approx 160 compared to 220. Not much coin when you are talking about stopping and steering.
Dasdubber on here is the rep for airkewld.

Another tip. I bought the bj disk brake spindles from cb and the caliper mounts fouled on the Honda caliper. I then ordered a set of bj drum brake spindles (USA only) and now the caliper fits perfect on my oversized disks.
Good luck t54

But for most people that putt there car around on the road what would be wrong with Empi spindles?
Not all of us race out bugs around a track.

SebastienPeek - April 15th, 2012 at 11:06 PM

Just thinking, when everyones in Adelaide is done, we should all go to Mallala for a track day and just swamp it in beetles...
That'd be a cool site that is for sure.

Anyway, I digress.
Everything I have gotten from EMPI I've had to replace with something more expensive.
Buy right the first time. Even if it is just for road use, when it comes to wheels and brakes, don't muck around that is for sure!

vwo60 - April 16th, 2012 at 07:24 AM

So much for the here say, has anybody measured the flex in the empi spindles, has anybody had a failure, face the fact that all the dropped spindles are illegal anyway, I have one set of CB performance and one set of empi, been on the cars for years with on problems. I cannot coment on the airworks spindles but when i look at there brakes they offer no improvement in braking just looks.

vw54 - April 16th, 2012 at 07:35 AM

EMPI equals CRAP

Turbo54 - April 16th, 2012 at 09:28 AM

VW060, I am not and can't comment on Empi spindles as I haven't used them and haven't seen any tests on them and yes you are correct they might be alright / good / excellent but until we test them you will never know. I can only comment on what I have done and personal experience and information that I gathered for my car and with that have made my decision. It might not be they way for everyone but it is the way I am going. I am not going down the airkewld brakes path and this is one of the reasons I went with there spindles, to get the clearance I needed.

Everyone should learn, gather and deciede for themselves. Everyone else can just shave information.
