He's back, same a$&@hole, different username.

helbus - April 25th, 2012 at 06:48 PM

They are definitely persistent. I banned the IP address of the first spammer, and the second one is a different IP. Banned, deleted and wiped also.

TorxKiwi - April 25th, 2012 at 07:06 PM

What a pain in the arse. Especially when it creates work for a volunteer administration.

whathaveidone - April 25th, 2012 at 07:39 PM

Yogie - April 25th, 2012 at 07:54 PM

donn - April 25th, 2012 at 08:21 PM

What's the point? what do these magots get out of this shit.

Shuffs - April 26th, 2012 at 05:25 AM

And yet another.I think you'll find it's all the same person using different IP adresses. It's how they try to make a living, introducing a pile of Spam Bots to a forum, then activating them at their convenience. They either pick a key word or just spam a set number of the most recent posts.I think Joel has the right solution to combat this sort of an attack, and that is to have the first five posts of a new member to be approved by a moderator before it is posted. This will nip it in the bud pronto!

whathaveidone - April 26th, 2012 at 06:29 AM

how do they make money off them??

MISS VDUB - April 26th, 2012 at 08:02 AM

They are trying to get you to go to that web site. Our spammer in question probably approached that web site and stated he/she could increase their traffic. When you click on the link provided,as well as taking you to the site,it also activates a counter, which our spammer keeps tally of.After a period of time,he/she will contact the web site owner with his tally count, and receive his/her ill gotten gains.People do click on these links(mainly out of curiosity) and spammer gets the credit.Unfortunately for spammer, the links were dead (going to said web site through your own search engine means no credit for spammer) and members here would sooner spend their hard earned on their VW's.He/she will be back! Here endeth the lesson.

h - April 27th, 2012 at 07:49 AM

esevwbits - April 28th, 2012 at 07:26 AM

Is there a Captcha key for registration? Maybe add one of those or even a Question like other websites have eg:

How many cylinders in a type one?
or
Veedubbers refers to which vehicle following ? VW

etc..

Seems to keep them out of most forums i use.

How many paint colours are in Lee's engine bay should stop them in their tracks.

Soooo annoying :td:

Joel - April 28th, 2012 at 10:59 AM

And back again....
This is getting rediculous.

I'm waiting for one of their posts to be in this thread just to add insult to injury.

vanderaj - April 28th, 2012 at 11:45 AM

There is a captcha here, so someone has worked out how it works. I'll implement Recaptcha and see if that helps.

In the meantime, I've banned three suspicious users, and an entire class B:

Code:

So that entire class B is now banned. Will not stop someone who really wants to try.

thanks,
Andrew

vanderaj - April 28th, 2012 at 11:58 AM

I've changed up the captcha settings and required e-mail verification, which will block the latest batch.

However, it will most likely stop stupid mail hosters who insist on dumb ass SPF verification, too, like Hotmail and Yahoo 7.

reCaptcha requires a bit of a change, and will take me a few hours to get it right.

thanks,
Andrew
