Driving Gloves WTF!
vvwbeetle - May 23rd, 2012 at 09:36 AM

On my way to work this morning I saw a bloke driving his Z4 roadster with black leather gloves on.

WTF!

Anyone else notice other things that doesnt make sense for people to do?

whatnow - May 23rd, 2012 at 09:57 AM

yep, driving around in old vw's when there are all of these good, cheap, newish cars out there...

waveman1500 - May 23rd, 2012 at 11:42 AM

You got the letters mixed up there mate, driving gloves are clearly ftw! Not that I own a pair, but I think if I had a roadster it would be a necessity. Of course, any roadster that I would own would be a proper British one, because men should not under any circumstances drive modern convertibles. Anything after the Triumph TR7 is no good.

68AutoBug - May 23rd, 2012 at 12:10 PM

I wish I had a nice warm pair of leather gloves last night when temperature was 4.9C at 9pm..

My Wife wore Here leather gloves early this morning

I may run a hose from the heater duct to under the dash to warm My hands.. lol

Warm hands don't come having Your feet nice and warm..

check out all the people wearing gloves in New York when its cold.. We think about what the other person is thinking..
that doesn't warm Your hands up..lol

LEE in Scone.. with temps below 8C every night. [even 0C]

vlad01 - May 23rd, 2012 at 01:09 PM

yup gloves in any open top vehicle is ftw! especially if you suffer a vascular disease like Raynaud's just like I do. But they have to be thin good leather loosish fit as the cheap tight gloves actually make it much worst by reducing blood flow even further.

why not go all the way with white gloves and suite and helmet too

vvwbeetle - May 23rd, 2012 at 02:06 PM

My thoughts to vlad put your helmet and suit on.

I forgot to mention he had a hardtop on so it was not like he was cold.

Just looked like a punce!

68AutoBug - May 23rd, 2012 at 02:14 PM

I think if a cowboy can wear leather gloves anyone can..lol

otherwise they might shoot You.. lol

the close fitting calf hide leather gloves...

I don't know if helmets keep Your heat warm ...lol

skin cancer prevention or dermatological UV/photosensitivity may be a factor, in this case.
The drivers hands are nearly always in the sunlight in some cars. Another issue with statistical evidence is that men are far more likely to have incidences of skin cancer on their right arm, due to the tendency of the male in the marriage/relationship to do most of the driving.

All very dull and boring information, I know, but not everyone is young and bullet-proof.

vwo60 - May 23rd, 2012 at 03:30 PM

Very old school wearing proper leather driving gloves,

HappyDaze - May 23rd, 2012 at 03:42 PM

A few years back, a young chap in our local car club complained that his fancy driving gloves wore out after only about a month. He was a bit taken aback when I suggested that he stop wearing them to bed.

dragsters for life - May 23rd, 2012 at 04:19 PM

driving gloves=style................ period

SebastienPeek - May 23rd, 2012 at 04:32 PM

Yeah man, if you're wearing leather driving gloves, doesn't matter what car you're in, you have style.

It's like being black, you wear your pants low, you got swagger. People see you and they go, oh shit.
People see you driving with leather driving gloves on, you got swagger too. But most people don't understand...

umm actually this is a serious problem. not just right arm, both plus the lower half of your face.

in summer my face feels like its on fire and I have to drive with my left arm behind my seat so it doesn't burn. the right arm is just agony some days and I got burnt on the aluminum on the steering wheel few times too.

Used to be anodized black, now its a light copper lol.

one of my mates got a very sunburn right arm when he took a 5 hour trip.

rose - May 23rd, 2012 at 06:08 PM

thanks for reminding me to get them out of the oval so I have them on sat at Wakefield. I'll need them down there. I use them as I don't have a heater in my bug. That's my excuse.

I beg to differ. Anything before the TR7 is ok. The TR7 is no good. We have one at work at the moment. It looks like an AMC Javelin and a Leyland P76 conceived a child vehicle and it was the TR7.

The TR7 may not be a very good car, but what I meant was that it's a proper man's convertible. I would say that the TR7 is sufficiently macho for a man to get away with driving it. A BMW 3 series convertible, not so much, and a Z3 is absolutely out of the question! Hairdressers only.

helbus - May 23rd, 2012 at 09:04 PM

Definitely a big difference between the macho convertibles and the metro models (convertibles and men).

We have a cool 68 Pontiac 350 Firebird convertible at work at the moment as well. Pull up next to the Z3 in that. The Z3 may be faster, but you have already won the race just by having the Firebird.

One of the guys at work has a 69 Camaro convertible and that is pretty cool too. Oh and one of the maintenance guys has a 67 Mustang convertible.

Combined with the hundreds of convertibles (mainly Austin Healey) that we work on, I now find the plastic bumpered cars very boring.

narumi - May 23rd, 2012 at 09:24 PM

I had to start wearing gloves because it was really cold in the morning
and the beetle heater takes a while to work well which by then I was 10 minutes away from my destination

ancientbugger - May 24th, 2012 at 09:21 AM

I remember buying a pair of driving gloves when I first started driving ,my first car was a frogeye sprite so that fits the profile, but I was too embarrassed to actually wear them. 2nd car being a 2 year old beetle wasn't the right car for them anyway so they disappeared pretty sharpish. What about car coats? I remember my dad having one, just down past your bum, a bit like a short overcoat. Does this make any sense to anyone or am I just too old :( BTW I agree TR7s being crap especially when the TR6 was so good, not to mention the 2,3,4,4a and 5 before it I suppose they should have released it as a Spitfire then it would have had a bit more credibility.

Haha ! The hair dresser must be doing pretty darn well on a hair dresser's salary to afford one of those :D

More likely to see one in a charade convertible of a ford capri convertible, probably with driving gloves lol.

Plenty available for reasonable prices on ebay:

One thing i did have a problem with on these gloves is you loose that 'pure feel' of direct contact with the steering wheel. Also, the grip/friction between the wheel and hand changes and 'slipping' the steering wheel through the hands when exiting a corner becomes hard to judge with these changes.

I think a true pair of driving gloves should keep the upper palm 'uncovered' so it can always be in contact with the steering wheel. Just personal preference i guess, whilst keeping the fingers and upper hand covered and warm (in winter).

This pair will certainly keep you warm, and aren't scummy looking:
