Volksy Museum Wolfsburg
Stanley - May 25th, 2012 at 07:53 PM

Being the resident volksy expert at work (apparently) one of the guys was quizing me about the VW museum at wolfsburg (like I'd been there). As I had nothing I said I'd find out.
He's heard the Porsche museum in Stuttgart has more classic vw's than wolfsburg. Anybody been to either and can offer some advice to pass on. He's heading over in July.

Cheers

The only VW I saw in Porsche Stuttgart was an early split beetle. On the other hand, the Wolfsburg factory museum has lots of different VW's as well as quite a few other cars that have been meaningful in the auto world.

Not far from the factory museum is another that is mostly VW and it is great. It is called the VW automuseum and this is their website http://automuseum.volkswagen.de/  but they are not open every day so check first. You could spend a whole day in this museum.

You can check out the factory museum details on their website http://www.autostadt.de/en/start/  as well.

We spent 3 days at the autostadt last time we were there and it is great.

There is also a split beetle in the Berlin museum. Will post a pic when I get back!

I agree with YOGIE, check on opening/closing times as it is seasonal and it can vary. When i went, i missed out on going to the automuseum because it was closed. you need a full day to enjoy it. Autostadt, which is near the train station and 5kms away from Automuseum, is also good but NOT completely VW orientated - they got a bigger variety of different makes. but here you get an opportunity to do factory tours. Its a money burner too - bring a packed lunch if you can!

when we went, there was only one english tour a day so you need to book in for it when you first get to the autostat.
as for the other one its good and is more vw orientated. well worth it.
saying that the porsche one was the best one of all just for the layout.

The VW automuseum is the better of the two - unless you want to see all the other brands that VW own ... wonder if they will build a new building for Ducati? or want to buy some VW branded items for their car that we can't get here (like first aid kits, umbrellas dash mats etc) or shop at the VW Shop for models etc.
The VW Automuseum is easy to find, its carpark is just off a side street, if they turn where the McDonalds is they can't miss it.
All up, I thought that the Autostadt wasn't too bad, but the automuseum was better.

I would also suggest the tour of the VW factory itself.

Book in the main 'hall' at the autostadt.

When we were there they were making the golf, golf plus (We don't get these.) and the Tiguan.

You need to check the days they offer the tour in English though. German obviously was most common, then french I think, English tour was not every day when we were there.

I think it took an hour to hour and half from memory.

We loved it.

Next time we would like to make the the trip up to Dresden and tour the factory for the Phaton.
