TomTom navigator Bonus 12 maps 3 years offer - be warned.
Uber Kafer - July 29th, 2012 at 11:02 AM

providing the benefit of my recent experience.
Got a Via650 TomTom in-car navigator that was advertised with bonus 12 maps over 3 years.
Anyway, my conclusion after trying to navigate their website to activate the bonus offer was the same conclusion of many people over the last 6 months, as evidenced by numerous posts all over the internet. I concluded that they really dont want you to find out how to activate and claim the bonus.
It took a full on snot-o-gram to TomTom to get them to activate it for me. Shouldnt be so hard. A techno product like that is only as good as the user experience. This one fails on many levels, and they need to fix their website. something to consider if thinking of purchasing a navigator.

Damn sounds lie a bit of hassle.
Did you not fancy a Garmin with their lifetime map update offer ?

No, didnt really consider it, and in fact one of the guys at work said similar, he reckoned their website and product activation was just too easy. Bit late for me at that stage..

I just liked several that were in work cars, they were both TomTom. And I actually wanted the one with Jeremy Clarkson's voice but this Via650 offer came up and it has the biggest screen and seemed ok.

Anyway, just letting people know, might save them some grief.

Life time map updates is a total wank, they only offer that to look impressive for a sale because the units don't last that long anyway.

They are that cheap now that most people will just go and buy a new one anyway as it generally ends up costing more and causing more frustration keeping old ones updated.

It's like printers that are easier and cheaper to replace rather than get new ink cartridges.

I've never had trouble with Garmin. They email you notification when updates are available and you just connect the GPS to the computer and five mins later all done.

Yeah lifetime updates are only for the unit itself, but mine has been going stronge for 5 years. Doesn't have all the features of the newer ones but still does the job. So i'd have to disagree with you on it being total wank. But thats just IMHO.

I'd have to agree, my Garmin is ancient in this context but just like a Dub, dosn't have all the bells and whistles but does the job.

mine has Homer's voice. its lol at first then it seems normal after a while.

My problem with the Tomtom is they are rather slow and can get you into situation where u don't know where u are going coz its recalculating consistently coz it displayed the direction after u already pasted it. forcing u to stop at the side of the road til its catches up. something you can't do in the middle of the city since there is no place to stop. a royal pita! otherwise its ok.
