Is it true rear seat belts in 1965 beetles were a dealer option?
If so is it true there are holes drilled from factory for seat belts under seat for lap sash?
Any one got pics of og seat belts?
Yes
saw a 64 model yesterday and it still has the plastic plugs in the rear for lap sash on the sides and would have head them for the lap belt in the
centre..
the original type belts were just lap in the front... have seen them but they were an option..
can remember being in a car with them...
My father bought a new beetle in 64 with no belts...
all the lap belts did was keep You in the seat if the car is rolled..
It is odd that front was lap only yet the rear was lap sash on the ends
??
I can remember the buckle being square and the push button release was in the centre with a white VW sign with a blue background.. the excess belt
was on the door sides [from memory] outer sides.. both sides could fall on the floor
when not used...
early seat belts were made from a harder material than those used now and they did not wear or fray..
wasn't soft and bendy like new seat belts that do fray on the edges making them illegal..

anyone know when belts came compulory ??
and lap sash belts?
Sorry Lee provision for sash belts only in the front and rear,no centre belt as they are 4 seater. My 67 1300 still only had sash belts in the front. The 63 Type 3 1500's had a lap belt as you say that was a coarse webbing and fell on the floor and out the door when you exited.
That was a guess as Mine has 5 seat belts...
and My Dads 64 had none just plastic screws...

Australian Volkswagens were fitted with seat belt mountings as standard from the 1962½ model onwards, which appeared halfway through 1962. Volkswagen
was the first Australian manufacturer to fit seat belt mount points to their cars. Holes were not 'drilled'. They were stamped that way, with hefty
screwed fittings welded in at the production stage. There was one on each B-pillar (level with the bottom of the window), two on the central tunnel
behind the handbrake, two under the rear seat in the centre, and one at each rear corner. The factory fitted each mounting point with white plastic
bungs and washers. Australian-made Britax lap and shoulder belts were available as dealer accessories but were not fitted as standard.
In 1967 Volkswagen Australia fitted the Britax belts as standard, but the body shells still only had two mounting points for each of four people - a
shoulder and lap belt only. There is a photo of the front seats and belts in the 1967 Australian brochure.
Modern 3-point safety belts weren't fitted until the modernised European 12-volt CKD body shells that were fitted after 1968. The factory used
Volvo-style belts and buckles, as the Melbourne plant also assembled Volvos after 1968.
