I had used Caltex 98 and Liberty 98 on the trip with no worries
over taking and accelerating going up hills etc.
Coming home on the Monday, everything was going well until Bulahdelah when I filled up after running very low on fuel.
From there on My engine was like hunting up & down, and because it was windy and blowing the car at times.. I thought that was the problem
although I had been on the road with strong crosswinds and had never had any problems before.
When I got into heavy traffic up the new england highway
I had problems pulling out from behind a truck and going up a hill at the same time.. I had the pedal to the floor most of the time. there was still
a wind... but it wasn't as bad as the coast... but My beetle didn't go any better..
On Forward to yesterday when driving around town, the engine was hunting badly like fuel no fuel?? and didn't accelerate much at all.. so, I checked
the timing and attached a handheld tacho to the engine and did the mixture exactly right... engine sounded better at least idled better.
Today, I was going to drive to the next town but only just made it to the Caltex servo, engine going maybe worse...
After adding Caltex 98 vortex within 100 metres the engine was back to its old self.. going just as good as it ever did..
The fuel I had was MOBIL 98...

I only use BP 98 n never had a problemo
what do you expect from 7/11 fuel stores probably had last weeks hotdogs minced up to make e10 so called 98

7/11 bought out Mobil servos in this country mate im pretty sure
still prolly got sausage mix but
I guess the emergency response for when the fuel is cruddy and your in the middle of no where might be an octane booster?
Not good hey, after paying top dollar. I'd be pretty dirty at em'
maybe it ran slower because it is a higher octane fuel that what you use in your low compression engine

I filled up there with non ethanol unleaded going both ways in my Prado, I think Ian and Rose filled up there as well.
We were talking about fuel over breakfast, Rose mentioned that she was told by a tanker driver that some servos don't turn over much 98 as its so
expensive and it goes off.

We put 91 in as it was normal unleaded not e10 91.
not like the old super fuel that never went off.
no worries it went just as good as it ever goes
We always use 95 + flashlube.
We have been bitten before using 98 one year travelling to Warwick when all 3 bugs where effected by using 98 at Tamworth
fuel filters blocked up on two, and a fuel filter & pump stuffed up on other bug.
It's ok if you know that the servo you use goes through a lot of 98 and you have no problems.
while down at Valla i could'nt BP ultimate so i stop in at Caltex Nambucca and put 95 in the Bus...man what a difference my bus seems to luv the 95 really drives well on it. I have only ever used ultimate and now i'll stick to 95
In the Ghia it has 10.8 to 1, do not use mobil, Only BP, Shell or caltex are the go for my car, always carry a bottle of octane booster in case i cannot get 98. Rose, the 98 was not the problem it was the contaminated tank the fuel was stored in, it could have happened with any type of fuel.
yup a lot of it is crap in the tanks in uralla the tanks at caltex are stuffed and every year i change the fuel filter in the vx it's blocked not even a drop out the outlet !
Every now and then a dill tanker driver drops the fuel in the wrong tank,(diesel in the unleaded or vice versa)realises his mistake and drops the rest where it should go,I saw this happen quite a few times at the caltex servo when I had my workshop sometimes they shut the affected bowsers and had them pumped other times we saw the result . More often than not it was a customer who put the unleaded in the diesel or vice versa.I will add that I leased the workshop only and had no affiliation with the landlord.
fuel quality varies from servo to servo.
just few weeks ago the boss and i needed like 100 ml of fuel to flush a pneumatic tool that blocked up, so he says "try my kluger, I just filled up
after leaving home"
I tried to siphon it and the tank seemed empty even with 1.5m of hose down it (typical SUV
), so we resorted to siphoning my comode which only sees 95 RON from BP and what came out? fuel with a bit
of water
over 50k ago I ended rebuilding my fuel system for the 2nd
time due to this crap. Still can't work out which BP servo it came from but we need them to bring back the glass bubble on the pump so we can see
what we are buying.
I first thought he was complaining about the price (95 costs $1.55 here and 98 is $1.66) but yes Servo's have lots of grey areas.The local BP distributor in this area had between 10 and 15 outlets and thought it might be nice to water down the 95 with unleaded.It came back to bite him,when scores of customers,whose cars had to run on straight 95 started having dramas.BP did a spot check on all of his service stations,and as a result refused to supply him with any more fuel.Bye bye greedy guy.
91 is 1.47 this morning, that means 98 must be around 1.70-1.75 or something like it.

Mobil fuels are just the same as everyone else's, the issue must be related to the storage or something non fuel related . Running high octane fuel in standard engine would have no noticeable effect to performance either. 98 blends have recently changed and are of a much drier mixture now that suits modern engines, running 91 fuel with a mild octane boost is the common trend now amongst the dyno guys and tuners, I've switched to this with my high comp stroker . That said, I'm yet to dyno the engine to find out how well we can tune it on this formula, standby..
Ghia runs 10.8 to 1 and it ping's on lower octane than 98.
Never runs well on mobil at any time, there is a major difference between fuel brands, my friends land cruiser runs on BP better that mobil diesel to
the tune of 200 KLM per tank running the same drive, even idles better when it is cold.
I use Shell for the car, BP for the bike and kero for the heater ...all good!

I think they will add the Ethanol to the imported fuel...
they wanted to have ethanol in all 91 last year but there wasn't enough ethanol being made in Australia...
and you can still buy ULP 91 without ethanol at old servos..
but I have noticed it has risen in price 10 cents... lol

Ever notice supermarkets start offering bonus double discounts on fuel just before major fuel increases? they NEVER offer them whilst the fuel price
is lower!! One would think these supermarkets actually control & manipulate the price of fuel in this country. Only one way to sort it out,
Stop buying from supermarket chains. And the quality of fuel is just absolute crap. Have noticed down here in Geelong that the E10 signage has
been replaced with "New improved fuel"??? with an added small message ( maybe not suitable for older engines) In my mind, anyone using E10 are
just kidding them selves, you will burn more E10 per klm than premium unleaded and your valve guides will shit the tin way too soon. Now
these comments are just from my own beliefs, some of you will disagree, but hey each to their own. Oh on another note, Penrite have changed
their HPR 15 to fully sinthetic a while back, and a few early camshaft & lifter failures are starting to pop up
I hear that some testing is being undertaken by penrite as well as
some independant testing from oil taken from a couple of very low klm engines that have failed. I was shown a brand new camshaft and lifters just
today that had only done 100 klms and you would think that they have done 300,000 KS. they were just flogged out!! rest of the engine was like
new. A good assembly lube was applied during assembly I have allways used penrite in all my aircooled motors since the late 70's should I have

I was just about to change to penrite gas oil...
I noticed in their adds about being synthetic
and yet in old forums people were saying it wasn't fully synthetic [years ago...]
I'll continue reading up on oils...

my mechanic uses penrite HPR 50 , he knows his vw's.
The HPR 30 is a high grade mineral oil with a resonable amount of zinc, 20w50, i have not had a problem with it but i still will add a small amount of
zinc additive to the oil at oil change time, when i pulled the ghia's engine apart it had all eight cam followers badly pitted with the cam shaft
worn to match, could not keep the valve clearences, i will not run synthetic even though there are several theoreticial adavntages, i do not have a
issue with excessive oil temps, Lee this is the gas minerial oil .

Lee, I have allways used penrite gas oil on my chevies that only run on LPG, I have never had an issue, and I am talking 30 years of driving. now that they have introduced this synthetic formula, I think I need to put the VW magazines down, and read up on oils. Remember the old engine oil add on telly? "Oils Aint Oils Sol" cheers Frank
