trying to find a fan belt on a sat before dotvw

hi i was getting my notch ready for the drive to the day of the vw (yarra glen) on saterday morrning to drive on sunday.
when my fan belt broke,so i went on the samba to make sure of the size .
then went to repco ! asked the sales person for a 9.5 x 1000
belt .
the salepersen gives me this strage look and askes if i had a product code .
no i don't ? so he looks it up under the car ,no listing ,then under the size, no listing.
they looked through the shelves ,and i was told if i didn't have a product # they couldn't help me .
i tried autobarn, supercheap,bursons,eastcoast auto spares ,
none could help me without a code or product # .
anyone else had this trouble.
wel i drove the car with an extra battery(behind the front seat)and finally got one at the trade stands at the show

Type 3's are pancake engines as opposed to upright, thus the 'cooling' air fan is driven by the crank pulley directly, as the fan is the crank
pulley, unlike type 1's
In regards to the supposed typical car part retailers, trying to find anything remotely specific to anything is a nightmare. Unless you want something
very generic, or completely irrelevant to the car scene like Kids toys, snorkel kits, camping chairs, fishing rod combos and carpentry tools then your
local automotive store is there to help. Otherwise its off to the specialty retailer 
My father however speaks of this 'mystical' repco that used to exist, where you could get real car parts over the counter, even rebuilt engines at
one stage.

that mystical repco was a long time ago(before computors)
and is long gone now
