Historic/club rego
paulaustralia - November 29th, 2012 at 06:56 AM
HI Everyone , have a quick question, I have a 59 bug the 36hp was removed over 20 years ago , for historic rego purposes would a motor size change
conflict with that. and i am running 14" combi rims with the orig hubcaps would this be outside of the rules also.
Thanks Paul

Actually, the real answer is that it's up to the club's discretion. Some clubs are a lot stricter than others. I have heard that the Fiat Club will
register any car of any make, without inspection. On the other hand, I have heard of a club giving a warning for using blue silicone spark plug leads
on a Mustang! Surely under-bonnet consumables should be ok, are they going to make him fit an Auto-lite battery? Or Poly-glas tyres, for that
matter?
For what it's worth, I have heard that in the VWCSA, you need to have the original rims. Someone had a bug on period-correct alloys, but were told
that they needed original rims to get historic registration. I would think that you would have no chance with a 1500cc or 1600cc engine in it. The
best thing to do is to ask the club's historic registration person.

As an historic registration officer with the Volks Enthusiasts Club of SA, I can only agree that it is a thorny issue.
Sure, it is up to the club's discretion, but they must adhere to the code of practice. And it is brutal.
Factory standard only.
And you now have to fill out a statutory declaration every year stating you will keep it that way.
If any non standard part is fitted you run the risk of being booked for driving unregistered.
Have an accident and the insurance company has the right to refuse the claim because you were driving unregistered.
Clubs have been formed to access the cheap rego and were deregistered for non compliance.
My LBug is bog stock except for the (original period) genie extractors. I just love the sound. But it is costing me an extra $600 a year to make a
pretty noise!
Some clubs are less strict, but in my opinion, they are taking a risk.
