1958 Lowlight Kamann Ghia Aerosilver
In the quest to free up funds for purchasing a more modern daily driver, I'm selling my matching numbers 1958 Karmann Ghia. I brought this car in to
the country from El Paso Texas where I bought it from a guy who got it from the original owner. It's very original!
BODY & PAINT
The car is in very original condition, with original Aerosilver paint on the door jambs, inner doors and dash. The outside has been resprayed many
years ago in a Ford metallic green, and an off-white roof. The colours look very period correct and are close to the original colour but the clear
from the metallic green has all but disappeared giving the car a satin appearance (roof is still glossy), which looks pretty cool. No
rust. The battery tray and floors are all solid. The car was in El Paso Texas for around 15 years prior to me purchasing it, so it has seen
very little rain in that time.
All panels are straight, and the nose looks to be really good and doesn't show any accident damage with the crease down the nose looking factory
correct. A magnet sticks to all parts of the body. Panel gaps are excellent all round.
Correct original rear window stainless fitted
Bodywork to fix the ding in the RH front guard and rust repair around the nose grills was done by Sasha at Delux and paint expertly matched (no mean
feat given its matte and metallic)
Inner nose area all very tidy and looks factory correct, original paint evident, no rust holes anywhere, horn boot present
Original boot liner present shows just how original this car is
INTERIOR
Consistent with the body, the interior is in very original condition and it sports the original 1958 specific steering wheel with the metal horn
button. The wheel, indicator housing, handbrake and gear shifter were all resprayed by Sasha at Delux in the correct ivory colour. The steering wheel
does have some cracks which could easily be repaired.
Unmolested dash. Headlight, wiper and choke knob are beetle type rather than KG mushroom knobs - one of the few unoriginal things on this car!
The door panels and rear seat coverings are original. Rear seat covers are in great shape, the door panels are in good condition but the waffle
pattern vinyl has separated from the green in places, but I love that the car is all original and largely untouched. Front seats have fitted vinyl and
fabric covers on them, but the original light green vinyl/dark fabric covers appear to be underneath. The carpet is not original, but it is a square
weave type carpet.
Rear seat in great original condition, with original fabric and vinyl all with no tears evident.
Headlining is all original, and presents well with no rips or tears, but it does have some discolouration in some places. Original waffle sunvisors
are in perfect condition (very rare). Note, the Blaupunkt radio does not come with the car; the original Aerosilver blank off plate will be
reinstalled. The original radio speaker was replaced with a correct size Jensen speaker – no metal has been cut anywhere in this car. The aluminium
drawer under the dash is a period correct tissue box holder.
Original waffle sunvisors are very hard to come by
Original Aerosilver paint, and cool sticker in the glovebox (that seems to be evident in every KG). Original owners manual is in the glovebox and
comes with the car, however the tic-tacs have since been eaten....
ENGINE & MECHANICALS
The engine is a 36HP engine which is not original to the car, but the complete original matching numbers engine comes with it in an original timber
crate with Volkswagen markings. Given the engine number on the engine in the car, I believe the original owner must've got a new engine from VW, and
had it installed, and put the original engine back in the crate for storage. The Birth Certificate confirms this is the original
engine.
The transmission also shifts fine, but it can be a little crunchy.
Car has a brand new 6V battery installed. Choke actually works (first VW I've had with a working choke!)
Mechanically everything works as it should (but the clock is correct twice a day..). All electricals work (except the interior light – did they ever
work in VW's???), the heater works really well
Engine looks very original, including correct luft cleaner.
Original engine in VW logo crate.
OTHER
Four Firestone 5.60x15 cross-ply whitewalls were fitted around two years ago, and the car hasn't been driven much since then. The spare has an old
cross-ply tyre fitted.
The car still has all its original trim present – outer lower aluminium spears, door panel spears, large Karmann Ghia script badge, nose badge,
nostril grills, windscreen trim, bumpers, etc, etc. If you know lowlights, you'll know some of this stuff is really hard (and $$$) to track down.
Correct nose badge fitted.
The rubbers around the side windows is a little crusty from being in El Paso for so many years and probably could do with replacing, but it just
depends on what you want to do with the car.
I have an original BeKoWa slat rack which I'll sell separately, but I will give the buyer of the car first right of refusal on it as it has
been with the car since the original owner had it.
Original BeKoWa rack fitted (brand new Firestones just fitted at the time)
Car is currently on full Vic rego.
SUMMARY
This is a really decent, solid, rust-free unmolested, original rare car, in a great colour. If you know lowlights, you'll know original LL's rarely
come up for sale in a condition like this in the US and Europe.
Since being in the country, the car has only been to the Jamboree in 2013 and the DoVW (for about 40 minutes) in 2014 so it's hardly made an
appearance at any shows, meets, etc
