57kombi - November 12th, 2004 at 07:33 PM

I keep leaving these openings for people.
I was bored last night and typed all that has been done to my bus, It took over half an hour to get it all down.
I had forgotten most of what had been done,

I have said that I wouldnt sell it, but, if I was offered silly money I would!
Would have to be around the 30k mark, so in other words it would end up in England.

Cheers
Dave

vwtyp2 - November 12th, 2004 at 07:40 PM

he won't put it on here, just in case his Mrs. spots it.;)
where's the emoticon for a whip cracking? ;)

57kombi - November 12th, 2004 at 07:50 PM

I will be totally honest and say I stopped counting at 18K.
That doesnt seem a lot, but I did EVERYTHING MYSELF, body , primer, paint, interior, the lot, I spent 3 1/2 years doing it and it was in primer in August so it had taken me over 3 years to get the body ready to paint.
I must admit I didnt work on it every weekend, but I reckon I spent about 24 hours a month for 3 years, or about 1000 hours in all.
The last 2 months I spent 3 days a week putting it back together
I Went to a local crash repairers and showed them the bus when it was finished as they had given me advice on the paint job, they reckoned that if I had brought it to them and they did the body and paint , they would have charged around 18K so that works out to $36K.
It is insured for 25K, but if it was written off it would cost 36 plus to get someone else to restore one.

This is why I am always telling people not to spend more than 2k on an unrestored bus, as they ALL need the usual repairs, so who cares if it has a good paint job, that will go when you do the sills and believe me EVERY unrestored bus will need sills, outriggers, jacking points, doglegs etc, etc.

Makes buying a restored bus for 20-25k a bargain

Hope I havent put you off.

Cheers
Dave

57kombi - November 12th, 2004 at 07:58 PM

I have bought things with money orders so that she didnt know how much I spent, I sent you one for the lights remember Tim.

The money soon adds up when you think, 500 for dropped spindles, 1k for the rack, 350 for the pop-outs(not including seals, 1400 for rubbers, having 4 wheels shot blasted, painted, fitted with tyres and whitewalls=1k, etc, etc. Also its the little things thsat add up, like sand paper, grinding discs,
then there is the engine, gearbox, starter, alternator, wiring, taillights, handles, locks,,,,,,the list goes on
I have just spent 850 for stuff of ClassicVW(pacific) which arrives next week, I hadnt added that to the figure.
But you cant really think about how much it costs as you cant do a cheap job on a split.

Must also say that PMGBUS did the welding and his panels were used, goes to show how good his stuff is,
End the free plug

Cheers
Dave

i feel like i have written all your posts for you, its only money i keep saying to myself. im around the same cash wise probably alittle more since i got dave beckers 1903 stroker ,and i also have the delux trim on the way and still have to pay for rubbers and interior . it just feels like it never will end .
no one would treat your bus the way you do and the cost would be rediculous to pay someone else for the resto and the end result ,would it be as good i doubt it. an awsome job

36K and yours and you might have a deal.

No I have thought about it and I would rather spend the next 3-4 years with my 2 1/2 year old daughter, I missed a lot of her growing as I was always in the shed.
One of her first words was "kombi" as the missus always told her thats where daddy is.
Cheers
Dave
