63 split highroof camper, RARE and only $1000!! now with pics
baybuscamperkid - November 27th, 2004 at 08:12 PM

ok, i have a 63 (i think) splitty for sale. will be at DOVW tomorrow. has some rust around roofline, some around back door and some around bottom. definitely not a write-off, could be well restored but possibly more suited to parts. has been sitting for 15years, high-roof in perfect condition, not windows cut into it or anything, van was originally a panel, has microbus doors on side and small sliding window installed in other. guards have been flared but are easily repairable, insanely wide rims on the back, also has 4 original width rims with tyres (2 od the tyres are 4plys!!!), brakes seem to have seized on one side, but wheels move fine on the other side, has all reduction hubs, lights with perfect lenses, 1300 engine (driving when parked), original steering wheel, speedo, fuel guage, nobs, front seats (passenger side 2/3 bench destroyed but there). chassis is perfect, have had to use it to jack in all sorts of ways to try to get the bus out from where it is situated and no sign of any weaknesses or rust under there. spent 3 hours trying to remove it from its resting place today, will be going back tomorrow morning at 8 (to frankston!), hopefully will have it out by 9 and will be at the show before 11.
dont miss your opportunity to purchase one of the rarest vw busses in australia, only one other known to exist anywhere

ok, got to the show a bit late but some of you still got to see the car. all agree that it is definitely restorable and many have succeeded in restorations from far worse starting points. i am looking for $1000 for the bus, it is a 67 i have been told, is currently located in Warrandyte, my PH is 97351442
this is too good to destroy, so please someone loving restore it like it deserves!
will add pics tomorrow

wow, just had a closer look, and some fascinating stuff on this bus! 4 orig 15inch rims, 2 with 4ply tyres still, plus the 2 fattest 14inch rims i have ever seen (both rusted beyond use), almost all of the glass (bar 1/2 of the windscreen) is original (has VW A on it), floor in back is perfect beside the edge that attaches to the door, front cab floor is better then average, (plus still has good nic original floor mat!), all lights appear to be original Hellas, all lenses are in good nic, front doors are very good except footwell edge, side doors are also very good, rear hatch is RUST FREE (even took the smashed rear window and rubber out and no corrosion to the lip!), side panels look as if they have never been damaged, this would ba a great bus to do up, if i had the money that uis exactly what i would be doing.

is that original?
looks like a panel with ad ons

baybuscamperkid - December 1st, 2004 at 05:38 PM

was a panel, roof either came from the VW factory or was attached from new by a company in melbourne. barndoors are original microbus ones (hence original windows)and long window on the other side was cut in in 1973, presumably the same time that they attempted to camperise the interior.

cmon guys, you know this is a bargain, i need to sell so i can pay back the money i borrowed to save it in the first place!

baybuscamperkid - December 6th, 2004 at 07:13 PM

cmon, i can only store it for another week and i need to pay back the money i borrowed to save the car!

david - December 7th, 2004 at 08:41 PM

it looks like it needs a lazy $20,000 spending on it ,good luck with the sale , i guess your plan to sell it at the jamboree did not work out

baybuscamperkid - December 8th, 2004 at 07:14 AM

actually David, it took me Sunday morning as wel to get it out, so i wasnt able to show up at DOVW until after 12. still in the time that i was there almost everyone that i met either told me that they had restored a split in worse condition or that the price was more then reasonable and that it should have easily sold on the day if i was there on time

david - December 8th, 2004 at 08:15 AM

send email to privates@justmags.com with all your details and a photo attatchment
