im in tas. im thinking (no guarantees) of buying a cheap beetle for when i get my P's. i'm not too fussed about the condition of the body, but i would like good mech. it also follows that the car would need to be road legal/registerable if there is no rego. south of the state is preferable, but if i choose to buy, i would go north if necessary.

Umm, i'm guessing your question is how much a beetle would cost?
look at the prices on this froum as a rough guide, really, there isn't too much difference from the mainland...
i sold a '69 beetle a year or so ago that had good mechanicals, but the body was very rough, registered for $700
