72 Kombi, whats it worth?
Dave_Bugz - December 29th, 2004 at 01:55 PM

G'day people.

looking to buy this. 72 Bay window. Goodish paint. Very small amount of rust inside door. New installed reco 1800 less than 1000ks ago. Nice clean manual transmision. 9 seater, inertia seatbelts. Interior is poor. Everything appart from the interior seems to be nice.

Whats it worth? rough estimate.

Cheers in advance!

Sounds similar to one which sold recently (Volksfolks) - $1500- remember it was a genuine factory version with lots nice little extrras and goo headlining etc .
Hope that helps

Looks like a Factory Deluxe (bumpers, body striping, clock etc). If it is, and still has all the deluxe bits it's worth more than a standard. From the pics it looks clean and in good nic.
Confirm the motor is all it's made out to be (and original?), and have a GOOD look for rust, kombi's get plenty in lots of hidden places (front floor + steps, sils behind front tyres, battery try, around windows etc). They usually rust from the inside out though.
If it all checks (is distance correct?) out see how you go.
To pay over ~$3000 for a stock kombi, you really need to know what your looking for to know if it's worth it.
;)

Hey man, $5k is a lot of money for something that you'll have to spend money on to make it your own. Although, from the ones I have looked at, this is the sort of money people are now getting. If only you could stretch your funding to $9k and buy Fatso (also on Carsales), you'd have a kickarse bus.

Look at it in the flesh, if it's straight, rust free and has a strong motor, it may just be worth negotiating as there are a lot of busses out there that need a lot of work done to them and are still selling for $3k+.

Good luck.

Actually Bugs I flew to Sydney to buy fatso after alot of phone conversations, picture veiwing and negotiation.. Was very disapointed when I got there as I found out a few things hadn't been mentioned. The only thing that was in good condition was some of the interior in my opinion. I could list the things wrong with it but i feel uncomfortable doing that as its one mans opinion. However I will say I was disapointed in the lack of honesty describing the car given that I was flying up there on the owners word.
lesson learned.

Kombi_Kid, are you saying your 76 is worth that? or would you just like to get that for it? lol. Actually mate for some reason I dont like high indicators on the later models! call me strange but it makes the world of difference to me. And I don't want to make another trip interstate.

Thanks for al your advice guys. I think mabye its asking a little bit to much given the interior is in poor condition but well see. I'll have another good look and drive and think about it some more. Compared to other kombis ive driven it did seem very strong and smooth. I'll have a few grand to play with after I buy, for interior, lowering and wheels. Plus I'm going to sell my 72 super, that should go towards some kick ass sound ;).

Cheers, let you know if I get her.

hey
yer i like early bays to they are schweet but we cant be greedy know!! i also have a 72 panelvan i did see a nice thing done to the front indicators on the later lights they extended to grill ( pretty much same lenght as early bay front grills) and put passat indicators in the front bumper another thing would be to use harley indicators on the bumper??
plenty of options if u get caught out!
cheers

ok, going for final inspection tomorow. Any last bits of advice?

phantom - December 30th, 2004 at 11:53 PM

I actually thought the Kombi looked pretty good from the pics, although I'll admit I like the higher (later) indicators. From what you could see of the inside it looked clean.

I'd be questioning the age of those photos though, as the rego plates don't match up. That car might have looked good 2 years ago when the shots were taken.....

From my limited Kombi experience, look for rust in the battery tray (as Andy said), also watch the seal around the windscreen as to how intact it is. Its listed with a bullbar (new chrome sign as well?), but not shown, so look for that. I was told once that if the sliding door works well on a Kombi, the car has been looked after.....so that might be a clue. Oh yeah, if you get it...that god-awful front visor has to go!

Look for the paperwork for the recon engine and check it.

Good luck....

I've a 72 deluxe.. This one you are looking at is bloody good from the pics.. Seems to have all the bits and pieces.. Only things I can see that would mark it down are, the deluxe trim is not in good shape in some places.. The intererior (door panels) look rooted.. Also they were a 1600.. Upgrading to an 1800 is not always a good option.. If it goes well on the road however you might be allright..

FYI.. I bought mine as a converted camper for 3500.. spent 2500 on refurbishing paint and an additional 2000 on intererior trim to bring it to standard.. Probably another 2000 odd on other bits..

See if you can get it for 4,ish.. I would say you are getting value at that price..

Good luck

Dave_Bugz - December 31st, 2004 at 08:56 AM

thanks alot guys. Phantom the pics are about 6 months old. It looks about that good. The interior looks better in the pics than it is however. I love the sunvisor! hah. The sliding door works well, i opened and closed it about 10 times.

StengGuns, yeh the trim was a little dinted, and the interior is the first thing i will be attending to. Paint is fine dosent need touching. The 1800 went well when I drove it, it felt much better on the road compared to the few kombis i have driven before. I'm going to go get a bank cheque for 4.5k and the rest i will negotiate in cash.

Once again thanks for all your help guys. Lookin farward to driving her home.

Ez, Dave

Dave_Bugz - December 31st, 2004 at 04:06 PM

Well i got her. $4750. Drove well on the way home (about 45 minuets) but when i got her home she was stalling? I'll get that checked out. Other than that im happy. Looking forward to fixing up the interior.

She dosent have a name, I'm thinkin of calling her Green.

Bugs - December 31st, 2004 at 08:59 PM

Sorry to hear about Fatso, just goes to show that seeing the vehicle in the flesh is worth more than a thousand photos.

I had a 71 camper and loved the low indicators, I'm a sucker for these early busses and was tempted myself by the one you're looking at, but I need a beetle at this point.

At this price, the bus must be in good order, otherwise it's time to negotiate ; )

Good luck.

Well I've just got back from driving 8 pissed mates around in my new kombi on new years eve. (dont worry I was sober, was drinking light) With 9 blokes in the car, weighing 70-120 kiloes each, and about 4 eskys loaded with ice and beer, she did very well up the steep hills of mt eliza and sorounds. Very happy. Can't sleep, dam coffee.

Very happy with it. Hurrah! Happy New Years people!

Fossil - January 4th, 2005 at 02:08 PM

Had been through all this before as well when looking for a god solid Kombi and luckilyk I had my brother check a couple out in NSW but the words and photos told 2 different stories.
I also inquired about fatso BUT got no reponses so thought either you up yourself with trying to sell it or full of bull.
Seen others also and yes the photos lie and it is the metal view which tells the truth - good on you for being up front with your comments - someone bought "Brian" from dr Steve @ Noosa but the $9500 he had on it was rubbish as the body was bad and interior well hadn't been cleaned I offered $4500 but glad he turned me down as I was much better off getting Peter Keegans 73 god bless him
