wtd : really cheap baja in Perth
Doug Sweetman - January 11th, 2005 at 10:32 PM

Anyone in the west got a real cheap baja they want to get rid of ?

Just a feeler to see what the market is like. I'm itching for another project, and keen to have something that I can get dirty in again....

Alternatively, I'd also consider swapping my 1835 powered 73 1303 for a decent baja of similar value. Its got 040 heads, rebuilt kadrons, HSC stage 2 cam, fully dynamically balanced, deep sump. Engine has maybe 15,000kms on it. Rebuilt single side plate IRS box, with superdiff, new rear wheel bearings, Empi 8's. KYB gas shocks all round. Highback seats and retracting seat belts.

Absolutely no rust whatsoever.

Once again, just testing the water to see what is around.

WABAJA - any of your mates got an unfinished project they want rid of ? Spare baja in the back yard ?

Thanks,

Doug

Just out of interest what sort of coin you looking at for the 1303?

and who rebuilt your irs box?

Doug Sweetman - January 12th, 2005 at 11:45 PM

Chris from Volkswest (one of the few Volkswagen factory trained mechanics in Perth) rebuilt the box - its basically all the original gears, with a new reverse gear (the old one was munted - hence the rebuild), original synchros (were still in good nick) and new bearings throughout. The superdiff is a second hand one, but has seen very little usage.

$ wise for the 1303 ? To be honest I hadnt really thought that far yet. I know I've spent about $8000 on it since I've owned it, and all the body work and paint were done by my father and I. I guess if I was going to advertise it in the quokka I'd put it in at $5000 and see how much interest it raised.

The engine also has a counterweighted 69mm crank and forged (cima's ? or mahles not sure) pistons. It cost me about $4000 all told and is quite a nice unit really.

Paint on the car is good, but not perfect. Has quite a few stone chips and a couple of cracks in it. But like I said - its straight and there is zero rust in it.

Also, new front ball joints, all new shocks, almost all the bushes in the front end are nolathane now. Front tyres are new, rears are old.

Not overly keen to sell it, but if the right Baja came up - one of similar value to the 1303 then I would be much more interested. Its my daily transport, so not really wanting to have to wait for the right baja to turn up.
