Thinking about selling my 1965 1500s notch and was wondering what i could get for it. has had a full body restoration (Birch green), 12v, all brakes gone over, rear suspension replaced, 1500 miles on top end rebuild (bottom end fantastic) New sonic extractor, Just recarpeted, New Rooflining, comes with many Accessories including original Tow bar, Tacho, trip speedo, pop out rears, vantan rear blind, mesh sunvisor (not installed). Lowered all round. always gets looks everywhere i take it. spent over $16.000 so far

I appreciate that u have spent $16000, but mate you are going to be struggling to get much more than $5000. I mean something that stands out might fetch 7 grand maybe, but while it is obviously nice, it doesn't look any different to a 4 grand notch.

A '65 'S' model should have bumper over-riders..... and (I believe) clear front indicators.

Nice notch - if you have to sell it then it's worth what someone will pay - appreciate the love and $$$ that's gone into it but reality is it's worth around the $4-$5k mark. Type 3's don't command a high price - sorry but that's the truth

I think the car looks really great....very classy.

But when you say full body restoration, was the car previously straight, rusty etc? If there was rust how was the rust repaired? Were panels replaced or panel beated? Is there any fibreglass or bog or is it all steel? Is the engine original and if so what is the mileage (on the bottom end)? How is the gearbox? What are the seats like? etc etc

I think some more pics are needed...ie interior, engine bay, more angles of the car etc.

As for price, I reckon the right buyer may pay more than 5..maybe 6-7g's. It an unfortunate fact that you almost never recover your investment when restoring a car. I hate to say it but if worst comes to worst, you might consider selling it to the Poms (prepares to be blasted) as you might get a few grand more in a more competetive market.

I would personally keep it. A ride that sweet will be harder and harder to find, and I regret selling a really tidy 68 squareback I had earler this year but at the time I really needed the money. And if you are about to sell it for $4000, please let me know because I'd take it for that.

Mate, If you let it go for 4-5k, you are crazy. But on the other hand, it IS missing some "S" gear ie; moustache etc. Id actually like to see some interior shots as well. Does it have 3 piece interior? Push button dash? If I were you I would bring it up to original spec, get it out to some shows and let it be seen. Maybe even aproach a VW magazine to get some interest?
I genuinely believe that Type 3's will escalate in value, maybe not to a Ghia level, but will escalate none the less, so if you can hold it, do it and wait for someone with REAL interest to buy it.
Unfortunately, Type 3's havent featured in any major films or werent marketed in the 60's in the same way as thier siblings were so they arent considered as "cool", but all Type 3 owners know differently!

Australian type 3 1964-1965 1500s are unlike the euripean models, In australia we only had a 63.5hp engine which didn't have a raised compression ratio of the 66hp euro , we did NOT have the trim long the bottom of the bonnet, and we did NOT have 3 piece door trim till the introduction of the Fastback in 1966. this is restored to the exact way it came from the factory.

The 3 piece door trim didn't come on the 66 Fastbacks. My fasty is wearing the original interior and is a 1 piece trim . My 63 square did have 3 piece trim though.

Fair enough, Michael. But not even side markers or left hand mirrors?!
So what was the difference between an Aussie "S" model and your "run of the mill", N series? The only noticable difference is the "S" chrome licence plate light holder. I know/thought the TS models came out in 66 which came with the "S" spec interior.
Oh yeah, $8900 is a fair price, imho.

Just to clear up some of the info given by Kruizin Kombi and Hutcho, the vehicle as shown and described by the owner is the Australian produced 1500s. It never had the moustache on the bonnet, pushbutton dash, 3 piece door trims, rear centre armrest etc. It was basically a 1500N with the twin carbs and single colour seat material if my memory is correct. As he stated, he has installed the rear popouts but essentialy it is in the FULL Australian 1500S trim as it came out of the factory.

At present, the only genuine IMPORTED 1500S vehicles which seem to have surfaced and are registered or roadworthy are the ones owned by myself here in Sydney and Aaron Britcher in Adelaide. Aaron's is a 65 or late 64 from memory and the one I have is a 64. We know of a few in both states which are just rotting away.

Keep it genuine if you can and look after it. Even the Australian built ones are now getting thin in numbers.
